Just picked up a Ruger Super Redhawk in 45/454. I picked up some Hornady 255gr "cowboy" lead bullets and trail boss powder to make very very mild loads for my fiancé and her father to shoot as they are both recoil sensitive.

Can I use the 45LC load data in the 454 cases? I'd basically load them with the max load using trail boss (5.8gr) powder for about 700-725 FPS loading.

I also have some 250gr XTPs and some H110 for me  anyone with load data for it as well?

Looks like you can do anything between 6.7 gr. up to 9.0 gr. of TrailBoss under those 250s, for 860 fps to about 1,100 fps. That shouldn't put much of a hurt on anyone's wrists. I tend to find TB is a little more accurate at the upper end of the range, but your gun will vary.

Going too lite with TB (low load density) causes very erratic velocities. VERY. Stick up in the recommended range for the .454 case.

I just saw on the trail boss loading data there is a "simple way" to calculate the load data.

Take a bullet and find the seated depth.

Fill with TrailBoss up to that line. Weigh. This is max load.

Calculate 70% max load amount and this is start load.

Really? Does anyone actually do this.

I am VERY interested to see if anyone has used the trail boss reduced load method described above. I NEVER would have imagined being able to use trail boss for my .308!!! Color me curious. Velocities are obviously low (1100-1400fps) but seems like some fun could be had, and I've got brass and 147gr fmj's to play with. Might have to try this, I'd just feel a lot better about it if someone on here has done it before me. Lol

Yeah. I was kinda shocked. It's like the maker says, stuff it full, your GTG.

I use trail boss in 30-30 and 308 with 160 plain base cast bullets for getting youth started toward big bore shooting. Nice transition between 22 and say, a 243 or full 308. Soft and accurate.

I use TB in my .308 with light VMax bullets. Works great.

"Accurate" ... "Works great"?!?! Sweet! I've got a new project to try out with components I already have! Thanks guys! Mind sharing the recipe? I'll obviously do my own work up just curious where yours got you.

Trail Boss with the 255 works very nicely. 6.7gr start 9.0gr max, per Hodgdon. Should go 800-850 @ start and about 950-1000fps @ max depending on your barrel length.

250 XTP and H110 don't mix. The 250 XTP is a .45 Colt bullet, and there is a danger of it coming apart in the forcing cone (4x the pressure). I use the 240 XTP MAG or the 300 XTP MAG - they are the least expensive of the .454 Casull bullets, and I have NO complaints about their performance.

If you really want to use the 250 XTPs use Universal powder and you can duplicate the Winchester Super-X reduced recoil load (1250fps, near .44 Mag level) and all you really ever need for deer. You can push them a little harder in .45 Colt cases with Ruger only loads and H110 (1400+fps). At .454 pressures a 240-250gr bullet can easily get over 1700fps and even 1800-1900fps, which is just to much for the 250 XTP.
