My son has taken up long distance shooting. I'm going to give him my CZ 527, 223 bolt action rifle.

I am going to buy a new 223 bolt action but would like an upgrade.

Your guy's thoughts.

Thanks so much everyone.

I agree your hard pressed to buy NICER rifle than a 527.....under a grand anyway ....
But if you're simply looking for a rifle that is "more accurate" or perhaps easier to shoot, go pick up a heavy barrel Savage, or a Tikka CTR, Ruger American Hunter variant..... something like that.

Are you wanting a heavier barrel, better trigger, nicer stock … all of the above?

Have you considered a higher grade CZ?

All of the above…fair warning, Tikka’s have long jumps…makes getting the most out of it harder due to mag lengths….

I'll look into all those. What exactly does Varmit mean or refer to?

Tikka Varmint has a heavier profile barrel they are very accurate and have a great trigger I love my tikka not a varmint model but still a accurate rifle

If you currently have the CZ American model, the Varmint is definitely an upgrade if your shooting paper or steel. They are still available, but you’ll pay a premium as they’ve been discontinued. You didn’t mention your budget, but the CZ’s seem to be running well over $1000. Let us know what you decide.

“Upgrade” is quite vague, but if we make the assumption on limited info here and base our bets on your other posts that you will be pursuing casual 300yrd shooting with an eye on sub-MOA performance, WITH a twist of limited expense, then I’d point you towards a Savage 12 BVSS, with a fast follow of the 12 VLP-DBM.

Comparing the two, the BVSS is a slower twist, but has favorable stock ergonomics and design for bench riding to produce itty bitty groups. 300 yards doesn’t benefit from a 1:7 twist, as 50grn pills will easily hang on (often better so) to sub-MOA and supersonic speed at 300. The 1:9 BVSS will also print well with the 69 and 77 SMK’s, gaining reach to 600+. The VLP-DBM is a faster twist, but is more svelte and designed more for field use, such it concedes a little for absolute stability.

The Savages may not be as sexy and refined in some eyes as the CZ, so maybe not an “upgrade” in some eyes, but when I think of shooting the smallest groups possible at 300yrds with an affordable factory rifle, I think of the Savage 12BVSS.

This is the path I chose for my project. Being that both the stock and barrel are easily changed I would choose based mostly on action material, and design. I prefer stainless others dont.

I did neglect in my first:

With the Savage design, if and when you graduate from 300yrds with a 223, the bolt head, barrel, magbox, and follower can easily be swapped with minimal tools and very little time to something like 6 BR and pick up range and performance without much investment. Most folks end up just buying/building another rifle, but this option is revertible and a little less expensive overall.

The Tikka Varmint would be my first choice.

The only downside is their short magazines. They can be modified for longer bullets or aftermarket is available.
