Looks like DPMS, Bushmaster and TAPCO may be shut down.

In the context of this thread I mean MSR (Modern Sporting Rifles ie rifles based on AR-15 and AR-10 not the Modular Sniper Rifle that became the PSR Precision Sniper Rifle which was a change-caliber bolt action chassis rifle Remington made)

The R4E and R10 could have been game changers. The were fully ambidextrous MSRs. They had feature sets competitive with much that is current on the market (M-lok handguards, etc) but Remington wouldn't/couldn't turn it on to get the volume up to make it a successful product.

The PSR was always stupid expensive. It is an awesome chassis gun but the nature of that program made it stupid expensive, there are zero reasons for it to be that expensive other than Uncle Sam would pay it.

Sad to see Bushmaster end, seems no one is making classic AR-15A2 or AR-15A4 (M4) carbines with carry handle anymore. At least none of the upper quality manufactures are anyway. My prefered AR is the classic A2 or A4 with removable carry handle, those sights are the best I ever experienced for iron sighted shooting.

because the fears of firearms bans have been allayed
Unless you live in
Virginia
Washington
Idaho
Illinois
Virtually everywhere along the BosWash corridor
The threats are real, just presently at the State level rather than Federal.

We have an increasingly urbanized culture (by way of mass media, etc.) and hunting is not an urban thing. Those committed to hunting & fishing are ever more so, but the numbers are declining. Enough that the tree huggers (notably Sierra Club) are starting to note the large budget decreases from reduced purchase of fish & game permits.

much as I hate to see gun stuff go away, when was the last time anybody bought a a bushmaster?

Yeah, and nothing of value was lost. Other than possibly a Storm Lake barrel I have a hard time imagining what I would buy from any of those companies.

Getting back to core basics isn't necessarily a bad thing; however, why didn't they sell those brands? They have a brand value.

Sorry, I don't miss them. Even Remington could die and I would not cry. I have Remmy's and I like them, but all are "historic" :D

Who would buy the Bushmaster brand with the Newtown baggage attached to that brand?

Harsh... :(

Nobody is buying them. Midlength, free floated, and pistol AR's are what sell these days. Palmetto will still sell a 16" A4 kit occasionally but even Colt stopped selling their 6920.

I would. With a smile on my face. I’m not silly enough to blame Ford for drunk drivers, nor silly enough to blame Bushmaster for Newtown. Even the SCOTUS appeal wasn’t a direct application of blame - SCOTUS upheld that Remington was wrongfully advertising firearms to under-age children and such was liable for the attraction of the kids to the guns.

I’ve built rifles on over a hundred Bushmaster lowers in the past 20yrs, and really only stopped because 1) Bushmaster dried up, and 2) Ruger lowers became available. I floated among spikes and aero lowers for a few years in between.

I’ve been exceptionally disappointed their National Match 2 Stage triggers dried up several years ago too, even before the lowers. I used a lot of them, not necessarily because they were the absolute best, but because they were great triggers at a low cost, and didn’t ever seem to “go down” like some other triggers would.

somebody is because I keep seeing them get bid up on and sell , the Bushmaster XM-15,and the Colt and FN M4 style carbines on auction sites. And like I said I actually like shooting iron sights, and for me the AR with carry handle is my favorite with that classic look and raise triangle front sight. Besides with a detachable handle one can put a optic anyway.
