Ok I'm wanting something in 9mm and I don't want to pay out an arm and leg for one. But I also want something of good qualty.

Some choices I narrowed down:

SW9VE(Sigma): I've seen this listed as low as $249 NIB w/ two mags.

Hi-Point: From the few reviews I've read it seems that everyone who has one is happy with them.

Ruger P89: This is my first choice and I would get one if I had thier PC9.

Yes I know that Astra and Stars can be had cheap but I worry about getting parts if I need one.

How about a Steyr M9. NIB for $249.00 Great pistol well built much nicer than the Sigma or the High Point. IMHO

Of the three, you will probably be happiest w/ the Ruger. The Sigma had (may still have?) a lot of quality problems. HiPoints are generally reliable, despite looking like a brick, but probably won't be much fun to shoot because of the size and clunkiness (sp?). Rugers, on the other hand, are a comfortable size and shape and VERY reliable. That would be my vote, of the three.

The recommendations are all good ones. My experience was: go handle and shoot them.

I was all set to buy a CZ 75 based on the rave reviews it always receives. AllI ever heard was how great the ergonomics were, what a great shooter, etc. I was also looking at the Ruger P89. It turned out that my local range had both of them available for rent, so I was able to shoot them side by side. It didn't even take one magazine to realize that the CZ 75 just didn't fit my hand well -- and that the P89 was an amazingly accurate and comfortable gun for me. Needless to say, I bought the Ruger.

That said, I also have a Steyr M9 that I bought from CDNN. Hard to beat the value for $250. It's also a very accurate and comfortable gun -- although definitely a different feel and style from the Ruger. (By the way, I bought a KP89D NIB for $315 and a Ruger KP93 NIB for $320. You could probably do just as well with a used Ruger -- they're so darn reliable and solid you'd probably never notice the difference).

Like I said, the recommendations so far are all great guns....but I found that one size does not fit all. If I had to pick only one gun, I'd go with the Ruger....mostly because the customer service is more dependable than Steyr and the accessories (particularly magazines) are significantly cheaper (like half the price!).

Hope this helps!

I should have explained. By low cost, I ment less then $400, in fact less then $350 if possible.

Just where can I find a CZ-75B or XD-9 for less then $500?

Now I've seen some Hi-Power clones that wear cheap but I don't know how good they are.

OnPoint Firearms is listing the CZ 75B with 2 15-rd mags for $402 + $28 S/H. As I mentioned, you can get a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Sig P228 for $369 + $10 S/H from CDNN. The Steyr M9 (also a great gun -- I like it as much, if not better, than my Sig!) is only $250 from CDNN. NIB Rugers will run you $300 and some change (CDNN had the KP93 for $320...that's a SWEET little gun. I bought one for my wife!)

If you're interested, all of my guns are on my web site, here: http://users.adelphia.net/~navy87guy/index.html Just click on the names to see some more detailed shots. There are also some examples of their performance on the Targets page -- click the bullseye target on the left of the page.

Shopping for guns is almost as much fun as shooting them!

Another vote for the Steyr S9 or M9 - slightly smaller and slightly larger than a Glock 19 respectively. Very well made, reliable, accurate guns - the best sight acquisition of anything I've ever tried or handled with unique trapezoidal/triangular sights. $250-280 from CDNN or Davidson's. Easy take down, nice fit and finish, better trigger than the Glock but still the consistent pseudo DA about 5.5lbs.

400-500 rounds in mine so far - only a few weeks old - with just one FTE using cheapie Wolf aluminum and even that probably my fault as I was doing speed drills at the time and probably shifted grip. Shows less wear - almost none - than the Glock did with the same round count

For new Ruger is a great choice IMHO. Would also consider and Arcus (Bulgarian high power clone)...though I have no direct experience with one to be honest. As well as a Taurus PT92 series.

Previously owned: lots of options open up here. Lots of third generation Smith and Wesson's available. And many others depending on your area.

For the price, I would go with a Ruger as well. They are the cheapest gun I would buy and still not have to worry about reliability.

I know you mention P89 but - despite some plastic and fugly factor - consider too the P95. I have the DC and have grown to like it a lot - solid, rugged and reliable - and takes +P too. It is no longer carry but a great recreational gun. Price is good and chances are you could get a pre-owned at a great deal.

used p228 or p226 from CDNN. Also, new Taurus 24/7 or pt92 series. I'd also look at Springfield XD's.
See which one fits best in your hand, and try one at a range if you can. Oh, and I'd also look at the CZ 75. Alot of folks consider it the best 9mm at any price.
Good luck-

David

I bought a firestar last week on auction arms for $180. Used ones typically sell for low to mid $200's. check them out.

Thanks guys. I didn't know CZ-75's were going for less then $500.

I'll see what the shop has next time I go.

9mm High Points used to be popular with the gangbanger crowd here.
They now seem to favor 9mm and .40 caliber Bersas, too many jamming complaints with the High Points.

I agree with the Ruger P95 being the best choice in a new bargain-priced gun. I've owned a P89, which was a great gun--I shot it better than I shoot my current CZ75B--but the P95 seems to have a better trigger, and it is also usually cheaper than a P89. A good friend bought one last fall, NIB, for $260, from Sportsman's Warehouse in St. Cloud, MN.

Here goes...I have a 9mm Hi-Point, after the break in period of 250 rounds I have had no problems with it At the range I shoot CCI Blazers, with no problems........OK, it's ugly, but it does go bang when I pull the trigger......Got it a a Gun Show for $98.00 before tax..........

Well when I get my refund, and/or rollup my coffee can of change I'll start shopping.
