I'm planning on buying a 9mm for home defense, and just general shooting/plinking I'm looking at these 3 guns:
the Hi-Point 9mm carbine, the MPA 9mm pistol on this site:
http://www.auctionarms.com/search/displayitem.cfm?itemnum=7513753
and a Ruger P89 two tone.
I'm definitely wanting to spend under $400 and I need something that is fairly accurate and reliable and has high capacity magazines available. The MPA looks like a real clunker, but it uses inexpensive and commonly available (at least for me) 30rd Sten gun mags. I think there are 30 rounders available for the P89 as well, and 15 rounders are available for the hi-point. The Hi-point looks like the cheapest option and I've heard that it can out perform guns costing hundreds more. I've never been much of a fan of pistol caliber carbines, but If I went with The Hi-Point I could afford to put some after market accessories on it like a 4x scope and one of those stocks from ATI
My question is which of these would you choose and why?

Sticking with your list, in order of preference:

1) The Ruger P89
2) The High-Point
3) The MPA*

Honestly, for that price, you should be able to find a CZ75, or for a bit more, a Glock.

Don't be so concerned about having a ton of capacity for home defense.

I know you're looking at the 9mm stuff, but have you considered getting a 12 gauge shotgun? You can find one of those for less than $400, easy. Especially if you're willing to buy a used one.

*Which I wouldn't buy at all. Pistols based on SMG's are generally very unwieldly.

<sigh>

As seems to be the ongoing trend, i'll continue my horrible off topic initial presentation of... wait for it...

wait for it....

"Have you perchance considered a Browning Hi-power? The FM versions can be had for $299 in some places."

There. I said it.
Sorry.

Justin beat me to it, and gave pretty much the perfect answer. If you don't limit yourself to new pistols, that should open up more options also.
Good luck,
RT

I'd look into police surplus 9mms for a pistol. If you want a carbine, check the kel-tec sub-2K 9mm. It can use the 33rd glock 9mm mags that sell for less than $30 each new. If mag capacity and quality count for anything, the ruger is the only on the list I'd even consider. Hi-point carbines work, but are limited to expensive factory 10rd mags. You've got enough budget to get a decent firearm, don't blow it on junk.

no, not a glock... never! haha
I was checking out a CZ the other day actually, I like the way the Ruger looks a lot more. I'm looking for something that has acceptable accuracy at 25-50 yards so that's why I included the carbine
Browning Hi-Power you say? I can't believe I hadn't thought of that :)
those are very nice, especially with wood grips
like this one on gunbroker for $500

I've always been a fan of that design

I wouldn't trust MY life to a Highpoint.

I don't like Ruger centerfire autos, but I'll take the worst Ruger over the best Highpoint ever made EVERY day.

As somebody else said, go for a real gun like a CZ75 or an Argentine Highpower. If you want a long gun, buy a used shotgun.

Rugers have been known to fail. Personally I don't like the idea of my decocking lever just "falling off" with no provocation.

ok guys...personal experience with the ruger and the highpoint have been very good for me. Both have been extremely reliable, no failures at all. Just one caution....dont buy the high capacity mags for the hipoint, they dont work, they dont fit, and if you force it just buy another gun.....they break.
got my ruger for 350.00 and the hipoint for 140.00. IMHO both are great guns.

Impala,
It always bugs me when I ask about a,b or c and then somebody else chimes in with d but I am going to do it to you. The Ruger is a good value, have you also looked at Kel Tec or Bersa? The Bersa Thunder 9 is one heck of a good value. The FM Browning is also a VERY nice gun. Taurus also makes some nice revolvers in .357.

Don

Umm... why haven't you considered the Kel tec 9mm carbine? You can get one that uses glock mags, (33 round glock 18 mags) that is certainly hi cap...

If you like the Ruger, look at a p95 I know a couple of guys who bought these brand new for $299 locally and they came with 15 round mags.

I am personally partial to the CZ 75B or it's decocker variant the 75BD, a friend found a dealer that still had a BD police model with tritium sights for $319 about 6 months ago... and there were still some left...

I have a Ruger P89 (manual safety model) and it serves as my home defense pistol over my 1911, Ruger GP100, and Taurus PT145 (although the PT145 is my carry pistol) and I do have the 1911 as the backup.

I paid just over $300 NIB for the P89 (two-tone with Hogue grips) and I think it was a great deal. The Ruger P-series pistols are not "prettah" but they are very well built and they do work.

In the P-series pistol owner's guide, Ruger puts this in writing:
The Ruger P-Series pistols are compatible with all factory ammunition loaded to US Industry Standards, including high-velocity and hollow-point loads, loaded in brass, aluminum, or steel cartridge cases. No 9mm x 19, .45ACP or .40 S&W ammunition manufactured in accordance with NATO, U.S., SAMMI, or CIP standards is known to be beyond the design limits or known not to function in these pistols.

That pretty much says a lot to me about the strength of Ruger pistols. While I only have a few thousand rounds thru my P89, it has never failed to feed, fire, or eject a round.

Impala, three words Browning Hi Power. You will not regret it. I picked up a used practical for a little more than you are willing to spend. Gunsamerica has several for right around $500.

Get a Ruger PC-9 Carbine. You will like it, and it will be reliable if you use good mags. The Hi-Points are hit or miss on reliability. The Ruger P-89 would be a good choice if you don't want a PC-9 carbine. I can't rate that sub-gun styled pistol, but I can't say I would trust it:scrutiny:

kel-tec

The reason I'm not really considering the kel-tec is that I see no benefit to it's strange folding design, I will probably mount a reflex sight of some sort on the weapon, meaning I would have to keep it in the unfolded position at all times.
These carbines usually sell for over $400 as well
I'll have to check out the P95 as well as a few others before I make any final decisions.

Rugers have been known to fail. Personally I don't like the idea of my decocking lever just "falling off" with no provocation

Whattt???? The P97 had some problems with the takedown lever sliding out early on, but I've never ever heard of the problem you stated especially with the P89. I've have a P89 with just under 3000 rounds thru it. They are utterly durable and reliable. I like mine better than my Glocks and as much as my Sig!!

I've never ever heard of the problem you stated especially with the P89.

Do a search here on THR. I've seen people discussing it in my time here. No matter your favorite gun, no doubt you'll find a horror story about it somewhere on here. I love my P89 as well, though. 2,000-plus rounds and one jam, and that one jam was my fault for not making sure the cartridge was all the way back in the mag. I don't have any experience with the MPA or the Hi-Point, but I have two Ruger P-Series pistols, the other being the P90. Both have been great. Impala, I would recommend the P89 if you're looking for a good 9mm.

I frequent Ruger forum with 14,000 plus members and have never heard it mentioned there. And believe me, they will bash a Ruger gun - see the p345 threads!! nunu.gif
I agree, you will find a horror story on every gun blowup.gif but I think he was making a "by and large" statement and by and large..... Ruger makes a solid gun!

The used Hi Powers would be my vote.

Or, the FN (Fabrique National) Hi Power from CDNN. Tne FN 9mm SFS would be a great 9mm home defense gun/carry gun.
