Hey all,
Hope everyone's feeling good.
I'm looking for a reasonable scope for a single shot cva 45-70 scout. I have a 3-9×??? Bushnell on there now but it's not clear at all.
I want something reasonably clear, robust and not super expensive . must be 1" tube to fit the 1 piece scope mount I bought.

I know Leupold makes nice stuff, I see some versions in the $300 range and others that look similar for $1500.

I'm no rifle expert and I don't do much with optics but there are no iron sights on this gun and I'm planning to hunt with it this year. I don't want to cheap out and need to replace it soon and I don't want to blow too much $$. I'm not a snob about clarity but I want something respectable.

What do yall think?
Thanks in advance .

I’m looking for the same thing for a Marlin guide gun. There are a couple Leupold options the 1.5-4 Pig Plex and the 1.5-5 vx-3hd. They have decent eye relief but could be a little tight on the high mags. There is also the Bushnell 4500 1-4 which advertises a 4.4” eye relief.

The Trijicon Credo 1-4 looks great but has a short eye box.

I like the 2x7 leupold with the CDS system for a big heavy bullet like that. I pretty much only shoot leverevolution from it so it's nice to not have to either pass or hold high off an animal if something presents itself at longer distances.

I have a Burris RT-6 1-6x on my Marlin 1895 45-70 and use it for deer and pig hunting. I absolutely love it. Down on 1x with the reticle illuminated while walking through the woods, and have up to 6x for when sitting on a field edge. Perfect for deer hunting here in IA where shots can be 5-150 yds!

On my H&R single shot 45/70 I knew I wasn't going long range with it or wanted to be all scrounched up on the stock peering thru a 9 power when that thing SLAMS my shoulder. I slapped a used Simmons shotgun scope fixed 3Xpower with the large diamond in the center. Works great for fast shots out to 100 yards. 2 Deer down since started using during late season straight wall ammo time here in Mississippi.

Mmm good, I guess you have to head shoot them with that .45-70 to save the meat. :)

To be honest, the same scope is on my Guide Gun. Reliable and keeps its zero all these years. Twenty to be exact. Got it when I got back from the war Sept 2003. All I could afford. Still sits on top because it works.

that little scope survived hundreds of 350-400gr bullets at 2400-2500fps, multiple remounts, an more than one drop.....

Id also be looking at a leupy 1-4x strait tube, more for the eye relief than anything else lol

Are those Aholes, the fish not the goats lol.

On my similar setup I went with a good used Leupold 4x Compact, for $225. I would love to have a bdc reticle, but this very useful in my situation. It also keeps the rifle very compact. hc18flyer

.....In the $400.ish range I really like the Vortex Strike Eagle series. Put one on my 30-30 lever gun 2 years ago and have never had it cranked up past 3x in the woods and I really like illuminated reticles since I can now legally hunt earlier & later than we used to. Just picked up another Strike Eagle for my newly purchased CVA Scout in 444 Marlin, because I like the first Vortex so much I got another. The 444 Marlin is close to the realm of 45-70 ballistics, far as I know, and I wasn't seeking a lot of magnification so a 1-6x is plenty for woodland whitetails; it'll probably be on 3x constantly when hunting. They have a 30mm main tube and the 1-6x is listed as weighing 17.5 ounces with the battery in it. Just got done mounting and zeroing it with a collimator on my CVA. Here's what a CVA Scout looks like with a 1-6x Strike Eagle on it... IMG_8102.JPG .. IMG_8092.JPG ... IMG_8093.JPG .. I have more Leupolds than anything else but IMHO the resolution & clarity on both of the Strike Eagles is very good. Time will tell how good this one stands up to 444 Marlin recoil but the listed 8 lb. weight of the gun will probably soak up most of it. If the OP wanted to switch to 30mm rings these are nice.

On a 1" tube, Leupold VX-Freedom. I'd want 1X or 1.5X on the low end. I've used some 2-7X scopes in the past, but anymore I'd skip over those and go 1-4X or 3-9X. I find 1X on the low end much more useful than 2X.

I have three Marlin .45-70 rifles (actually four) and each has a different low power scope. I prefer a one inch tube to keep the sleek levergun sleek. Here is one with the Leupold 1.5-4 VX with the newer version of the so called Pig Plex.

This one has a Nikon African 1-4:

And my favorite in all ways, a Burris Scout fixed 2.75:

And on topic, my CVA .44 Magnum with some sort of actually decent 2.5 power scope:

I have a .45/70 and have a Leupold 1x4 with heavy duplex on it. Works perfect for how I use the .45/70
