I'm rather new to top-of-the-line pneumatic rifles, having just traded for an RWS .17 caliber. I understand that certain lubricants are necessary. Other than specifically labeled lubricants, what's safe to use in all areas of air rifle maintenance and what are some specific maintenance procedures? I'm not new to guns (I'm a serious wildcatter) so any technical jargon is welcome. Thanks.

Following manufacturer's instructions is always best.

You should use a silicon based lube. No petroleum additives to prevent dieseling. At the end of the day, i shot 1 or 2 lubed felt pellets through the barrel to clean & protect it. Shoot a few dry felt pellets before shooting the lead pellets to remove all oil. This was for an old Feinwerkbau air pistol that had a spring.

Silicone is imo a horrible lube for a gun. You didn't mention what gun you have, different types have different needs...
