If home blued with Birchwood Casey, heating up the steel too hot will all too often result in a purplish color from the BC bluing mercury content.

One way to avoid such is to rust blue it, Laurel Mountain browning solution works great. After browning as normal, just submerse it in distilled boiling water, this will convert it to a deep, almost black blue, and it will wear well for a long, long time.

I used some steel wool then went over it with the cold blue.

For now ill leave it like this.

My 94 Winchester frame came back from bluing looking similar. How does it shoot?

not sure i need to figure out the action problem.

Cabelas has a parts kit for the 58 that replaces all of the action parts i thought ide go pick one up today and rebuild it.

Im going to shoot the brass frame 1860 today i reamed it out yesturday while watching football :D

Can i do anything with this one the way it is to turn it black?

Would the boiling distilled water blacked it up?

I finally got a chance to get out and shoot its been a while since ive got to shoot. The weather was the best last weekend i think it got up to like 60 on sunday but they had a gun show so i HAD to go to that insted.

It was a little windy here today but this thing shot great! for the first time shooting it i was REALLY suprised how well it did. The first cylinder it was a little left using my lazer bore site i thought i had it pretty close.

I moved the front left a little more and the second and third cylinders were pretty dead on i think.

I put 2 cylinders of 2F T7 20g by weight, then tried that Black MZ stuff wich i think is 2F but it seems a little heavier 45acp shell threw about 23g by weight.

I think the 2F T7 shot better in the Lyman and the Black MZ shot better in the Colt.

Hey Bower, rust bluing will probably work on that. I used Laurel Mountain browning solution on a friends flintlock. But, when I boiled it the parts they turned a beautiful dark rust blue. There was a guy on one of these forums, I think his handle is BobVz, he makes a rust blue formula too but I have not used it. I think its "Rustblue.com".

A lot of the Lymans turned purple after a while. I'm told this is due to a higher than normal copper content in the steel alloy.
Most of the earlier Lymans were either ASP or Uberti built. Uberti wasn't shy about putting their mark on the frames, ASP generally hid their "DGG" mark on the borrom flat of the barrel under the head of the cylinder pin, and most kit builders conveniently filed it out. Look under strong light with a magnifying glass; there may still be shadow traces left.

Got in the purple heart toolslinger sent me (thanks for the wood toolslinger) picked a chunk to start with.

Nice! That thing is gonna be gorgeous with those grips. I personally love the color on that frame.

Did you shape your grips from this thick chunk? I could almost cut them in half thinner and still have enough wood to shape.

I gots some sanding to do!

I hope these grips bring out the color of the frame a little more, its starting to look a little more brown.

This will be the first set of grips ive ever made for a gun.

What technique did you use to get the hardware from the old grips? Those little brass rings and the brass nut on the other side?

jeesh $20.!?

Is anything on Brownells or Midway USA site reasonably priced?

Brownells wanted $90. for a reamer i got off Amazon for $12.

Well that's 6 screws and 12 escutcheons. But if you don't want to spend the scratch you can cut the escutcheons out of the old grips. I don't have a particular technique. Start a hacking. What I have done in the past is offer to trade your old grips for an escutcheon screw. Surely someone on one of the sites would make you that deal.
I'll even sweeten the deal. I don't have any screws left but if someone can set Bower up with a screw set I'll send them their choice of , Purple heart, cherry, or red oak for some grips. I got plenty.

I think i need to start over, i dont think i have enough skill to do this.

I think ill wait till it warms up more i can use powertools outside.
