I have a Walther P99c in 9, considering a P99 or M&P 9mm full size.
Does anyone have both? if so, which would you keep if you "HAD TO" get rid of one and why?

Sounds like you and I have a similar problem. I'm looking for the full size equivalents.

I've shot the M&P and it is damn impressive. I have yet to shoot a Walther, but I hear such great things about them and I really like the look of them.

As it stands now, I'm going to buy an M&P and get the Walter later.

I've shot the M&P. If U have a P99c in the A/S variety - there is no better gun of its size.

In 9MM, I'd take the M&P, but in .40, Id rather have the M&P. Now, if you compare it to the XD, I'd rather have the M&P.

From what I've seen, reliability is a non-issue with both.

I find the S&W trigger to be crisper and more responsive, and I'm more accurate with it. It's also the less costly of the two.

The Walther has the best trigger out there. The reset on the A/S trigger is incredible. I suggest you try shooting them both, then decide.

I don't own a M&P nor have I have I ever shot one, but I do own three P99s.
Obviously, I like the P99 a bit. IMO the P99 is the best polymer gun out there (at least in the AS version).
Try to shoot both if you can and choose the one you like better. If you can't shoot them before buy, get the P99 you won't be disappointed.

Well, I don't fit your exact profile. I own a P99 and HAVEN'T purchased a M&P because it's too similar and I like it less. I did own an XD for a year .....

Won't the mags exchange? How bout mag holders and holsters? Seems like there are good reasons to keep it in the family. However, if you are looking to add diversity to the mix then the M&P could be the right choice.

I have the M&P .40, love it, but I did get a trigger job(something I am hearing they are doing inhouse now). I like the side profile of the M&P better for concealed. I like the out of the box trigger on the P99 better, it's just awesome! Ergonomics of both are top notch. That being said, a sand colored P99 .40 is probably a near term purchase for me.

decocker

The Walther P99 AS is unique because it is striker fired but has a decocker. Any opinions on whether this more complicated design could lead to less reliability or durability issues? Would this be a good option for those concerned about a light trigger on a CCW.

I have a 1st gen P99 in 9mm and an M&P45. The Walther has the better trigger by far, the M&P is easier to shoot accurately with less muzzle flip. Both feel great in the hand. If I could only keep one, it would certainly be a tough decision.....but it would probably be the M&P.

Luckily....I can keep both. :)

I have an M&P 9c, and have put a few hundred rounds through a fullsize, my brother has a P99 A/S, we shoot together often, and swap pistols. Both are completely reliable, and comfortable, the P99 is slimmer, smaller than the M&P fullsize, but bigger than the M&P compact, and is quite accurate, can be decocked for what feels like a DA/SA operation, and the trigger is fairly light, but a little spongy, and feels like it releases too far back, and travel is too long, in A/S mode it is the same light pull, but twice as long as normal. I like the P99 a lot, it is a very comfortable and quality pistol, and has the euro trigger guard style mag release (love it or hate it), but the trigger feels a little too light and sloppy, the sights aren't as good, and while it feels more rigid than an XD or glock, it has noticeably more flex than the M&P.
The M&P on the other hand has a crisp trigger, and is fairly light in the 9/357sig/40 pistols (5lbs), the 45 is still crisp, but has a heavier pull (8.5lbs). The M&P only has a hinged type trigger safety, but has a traditional button type mag release. They have a stainless steel chassis molded in the frame, and have about the least ammount of muzzle flip and recoil I have felt in a 9mm pistol that wasn't comped. My M&P did seem to require a slight break in period of about 250rds, where it would not go completely into battery about 3 or 4 times in that period, but has been flawless in the 1000rds since, the P99 was utterly reliable out of the box, and so far hasn't had a malfunction of any type. Both are very accurate, but the M&P is easier to accurately rapid fire, and I can swap mags faster in the M&P, and the novak type sights are better on the M&P. As a bonus, S&W has a coupon on their website for a $50 rebate, and 2 free mags untill january or so. Either pistol will serve you well, as both are really good, for CCW the P99 is a little slimmer and more comfortable than the M&P fullsize, but the compact is easier to conceal, as far as shooting, the M&P is easier to fire more shots accurately from the draw, and all around a simpler and more user friendly design, and if I had to choose between the two , the M&P would be my choice, full or compact as need dictates.

MP is the One--!

I am with George Hill all the way! Right now it is even Sweeter with a 50 Dollar rebate and two free mags! I have the MP .40 and 9mm, both full size. I have shot the Walther at the Range. Nice gun, but I find the MP to be more accurate. The MP is slimmer, so it is easier to carry. Cannot go wrong with the MP, it is a Great Deal:)

The Best to You and Yours!

Having owned and shot both, I much prefer the M&P. The ergos are just a little better, but the trigger is crisp in the M&P and does not stack like my P99 did. After several hundered rounds, I just couldnt get used the the P99 trigger so I sold the P99 to a nice gentleman who seemed to like it at the time, and used the $$ to put towards my M&P45 to go with my M&P9.

There were some very good features with the P99 however:

Slide mounted decocker
No funnel shaped Mass Hole
Second strike ability for hard primers

I just couldnt get over the trigger difference when I shot them side by side. I really like my M&P.

It gets old for me to keep saying I love the M&P so instead I will just use a quote

I've had a Walther P99c for about 2500 rounds now. It's the AS model and I like everything about it. Accurate, fairly light, never any failures of any kind, regardless of ammo, I really like to long first pull, then the short SA pulls for the rest of the mag. Here's mine:
