I've got an IAI M1 carbine, its a blast to shoot but i'm getting the impression that if i had a different stock or maybe even a pistol grip stock i would be able to shoot alot better with it.

What have you guys done to your carbines? Anyone tried the handguard rail?

I am an old school type. I like the M-1 Garand, M-1 Carbine, M-14 and Mini-14 because they don't have a separate pistol grip. That said, the rail for a forward mount scope looks very useful.

There are synthetic stocks available for the M-1 Carbine. I have a folding synthetic stock on one of mine (I think that it's made by Choate), but I know that some manufacturer makes a non-folder synthetic with a pistol grip.

The forward rail MIGHT be worth looking into, but I haven't gone that route. I think that either a red dot system or long eye relief scope would give you slightly better target acquisition, but I'll stick with the iron sights. Besides, the M-1 Carbine wasn't made to be a long-range shooter. It's better than a handgun, but not as good as a full-sized/full-powered center-fire rifle.

I was looking for a synthetic stock but the folder from choate looks to flimsy and i don't like folding stocks anyway. I am definetly going to put either an EOTech or an AimPoint on it once i get some money.

edit: I didn't realize choate made the non-folding version of that pistolgrip stock.. I think i'll try that and the handguard rail-mount. I'll save a little money and get the aimpoint maybe

The Choate folders are anything but flimsy, but you probably would be better served with the fixed pistol grip stock. I prefer it myself.

Do the choate stocks come with all the hardware? are they just drop on or do i need to buy a barrel band retainer and spring and all that other hardware?

You can buy extra parts if you want to. I just used the parts from the wood myself.
