Thinking about getting an M1 Carbine for plinking, fun, historical reasons, and for miscellaneous use. Auto Ordnance is making them now, as close to GI as you're going to get without buying an actual GI. Anyone ever handled or shot the Auto Ordnance M1 Carbine? Thoughts, praises, gripes, complaints, concerns, etc?

very cheaply made in my opinion. save your pennies and get the real thing. have two friends that have owned them and they both say the same thing.

PC Guns

An added bonus is that the Carbine is much more Politically Correct than, say, an SAR1.

Short of a full blown scenario with a failed Judicial System (ok, I know that it is already failed), the M1 Carbine would be an easier court defense when the Prosecuter tries to show off the "evil assault rife" to the Jury.

just bought Kahr/ Auto Ordinance m1 carbine with my 13 year old in mind. While not as historical as original, having a great , troublefree time. Light, accurate. Dress it up with a stock pouch, sling & bayonet. It's become his favorite!

Another vote for GI. Not too much more, and it'll hold its value better than the Kahr. They're TONS of fun to shoot. Definitely a must-have, in my book, along with it's big brother, the M1 Garand. :)

Can any of you recommend any dealers that have US GI M1 Carbines or even Auto Ordnance for under $600? What's the lowest price to be expected out there? Thanks for the help!

Unlike those who "have friend who have seen a brochure about one", I've had one for over a year and a half. The serial # on mine is under #200.

Mine has been very reliable, accurate, and a joy. I've put thousands of rounds through it at this point, and have taken advantage of the fact that it's USGI-compatible. My spare bolt is an underwood, and functions fine. A USGI M4 bayonet fits perfectly.

The only reasons to buy a USGI carbine are if you want a "collectors" item, if you are into the history of it all, or if you're buying it as an investment. Otherwise, a new carbine has the advantages of tighter tolerances, better accuracy, and a factory warranty if something does go wrong.

BTW - the most common complaint I've heard about the "Kahrbines" is that they are very tight when new. Lubricate it properly and work the slide a hundred times or so and it will work just fine. USGI carbines don't have this problem precisely because they are well-used and already broken in - sometimes to the point of being rattletraps.

I've seen one up close. It was being boxed up and sent back due to every third round not extracting. Otherwise, it looked real nice. Personally, I think if he kept fiddling with it, it might have broke in.
