M16 rather than notorious AK47

I would take all the free M-16s you will give me instead of spending a dollar on an AK. They are not stupid.

Either way, the afghans dont pay a cent for any of it. I dont know how cheap the US govt can purchase a surplus AK but I bet its a lot cheaper than a new M16.

M16's aren't made in China yet, so the money the Gov't. spends is actually going to U.S. businesses - they might as well get some of the money that our Gov't. seemingly has plenty of.

It's not like we're going to have a great big line in Kabul to hand out free machineguns to the locals . . .

I bet thats where they will end up in another 10 years though. Maybe not for free, but in the hands of locals who paid nothing for them. I wonder if we send enough over to that region if it doesn't replace the AK as the preferred rifle.

Every time I've been on guard duty with a "coalition partner," he has offered to swap me his beat-up, ratty old AK for my M4. The Afghans all want rifles like ours. Most of them don't know crap about weapons, but they assume that if an American has an M4, it must be better than an AK!

I do question whether the typical ANA soldier has the discipline required to clean his weapon after every mission. I have seen lots of ANA whose priority is getting high every night, rather than weapons maintenance.

Give it ten years (probably less), and those US supplied rifles will be shooting at US soldiers... like always. But now, with twice as much effective range.
