I own a K98 S/42G Mauser rifle. At this time, I have replaced the rear sight with a B-Square scope base. I am going to buy a 2 or 4x non-variable scope for it. The two scopes I am considering are the Burris 4x handgun scope, #200242, and the Leupold 2.5x28 scout scope #58810. Is there going to be a difference in using a handgun scope, as opposed to using the scout scope? Do any of you have experience with this type of mil-surp/scope set-up? I will be shooting no farther than 300 yards. I wish to use this type of scope system because I do not want to drill and tap the rifle, thus ruining its' originality. Any input of your success of failures with this type of a scoping system will be appreciated.

i would shoot irons with it, if you want a mauser to scope and hunt with i would buy a yugo alot cheaper and less historical to bubaize lol.

BUT its your gun so you can do with it as you please that is just my opinion :)

The rear sight replacement mounts are nice because they do allow you to add optics to your milsurp without damaging the historical value of the gun. They may not be as solid as drilling and taping but they work well enough and when you want to go back to iron sights and the original look of the rifle then all you have to do is remove the mount reinsert the rear sight post and its back to how it started with no trace of bubbazation.

I think you made a good decision to go with that mounting option. As for the scopes, I have that Leupold Scout scope on my M1a Scout rifle and I really love it. Its great quality optics that I have no complaints about. As long as its a LER scope then it should work fine on your Mauser whether its designed for handguns or rifles.
