I don't feel undergunned with any of them so long as I have had enough practicing to feel confident. However, for HD, I prefer 30 rounds of .223 ;) So I guess I'm with the "lots of little bullets" category :neener:

@ allaroundhunter: I hear ya bro! I have a 12 gauge next to my bed for HD. I'm a surgeon with that badboy!

I have finally settled on 9mm for carry. I like the idea of 10 rds, at a minimum, in a sub-compact. Hopefully won't need them but just in case... There will be a full size 1911 in the end table tho.

Yea, I LOVE my Glock 26, I happen to think the G26 is better than the 19. 10+1 rounds of 9mm makes me feel cozy as well.

I used to have a .45 on the nightstand because I do respect the bigger is better theory, but now I have my Sig P226. I have a chance to shoot a Sig P220 soon and if this gun shoots as amazing as the P226 then I'll have a .45 back on the nightstand very soon.

I love both of these guns....so much so that I'd have a hard time picking one over the other for the nightstand job....

I came from HK's and even though I respect Heckler and Koch, I never loved any gun more than I love my Sig P226 Tac. Maybe I'll go with a Sig P226 .40 S&W to give me a little more punch than my 9. It's hard to beat the Sig P226, I don't know why so many people talk bad about Sig.

None of the above.

I want something that fits my hand well, in the most powerful caliber I can shoot accurately and master control of.

I settled on a 1911 in 38 Super, and mid-size revolvers in 38 Special. Capacity is a distant consideration, far after all those other criteria are met.

When a gang of 10 is carjacking you, 6 or 7 rounds might not cut it. Put me in with the more is better crowd.

I'm in the get what you shoot best & is reliable camp.
Absolutely agree.

In steel comp, the revolver guy has six rounds and hits 6 plates pretty fast. The next guy has a 16+ auto and hits 6 plates but a little slower.

If the the high cap guy shot as well as the revolver guy, he has the best pistol for SD.:neener:

FBI was instrumental in developing the .40 S&W for KILLING POWAAHHHH!!!!!!!

Anything less and you might not make it out alive. I chose the G22 for a mix of round width and capacity. Its just a bonus to find out that the FBI issues glocks in .40S&W to protect there agents.

Heres the FBI's handgun wounding and effectiveness report.

G-T-H-I-R-T-Y = G30 = a Glock = in a 45acp caliber = standard mag of 10+1/11 rounds, optional mags 9+1 and 13+1

Its size is between the G26 and the G19 both 9mm`s, but it is a little wider and a slight bit heaver, and thought it might be a little bigger then their G26 it is easier < for me any ways > to CCW then their G19, it does fill the pocket of my cargo shorts when I carry it that way, sometimes, but, with all the stuff we stuff into our pockets these days no one is non the wiser if they even are looking at my spoofed up pocket. I just make sure it don`t scream, "YO ... HE HAS A GUN IN HIS POCKET!!", and with a good belt most of the time I forget it's there. I don't mind the extra luggage of having peace of mind.

It's a trade off I do not mind paying for.

And having 11 rounds of 45acp on-board helps keep me a warm & fuzzy fellow < ymwv

And AndersonG22, don't mean to be of any annoyance, but that report is like 15yrs old +, and since 1987, even .380acp ammo has come a long way since then. Not that I would rather carry an LCP/.380acp over a G30/45acp spiting out flying ashtrays if given the choice, but are there any volunteers out there in cyber world that would like to step off 15 to 20 feet and let me empty my LCP into your body? I don't think so??

I use both of the above and don't feel bad/underarmed. Current favorite carry is this one, CZ SP-01 Phantom.

19 rounds works for me, and it is very accurate and reliable. I'll carry what I can use and like. Still considering a 38 Super... :D

For those who seem to think that one or two rounds of a larger caliber will be all thats needed, and you have the skills (from what Ive seen at various ranges, most dont) to make that happen, you may want to read this awhile....

Starts at page 32.

Its another after action report by Massad Ayoob in his "Ayoob Files". It covers a shoot out between a cop and a suspect, both armed with .45ACPs, distance was about 5-6 feet. Guns were already out for both. 23 rounds expended in 5-10 seconds. Both shot to slide lock. The bad guy got one hit out of 9, the cop, 7 of 14. His comment at the end about why he thought his first rounds were probably "misses" is interesting.

Now, I know this is only one instance of something going on, but it does cover a number of things all in one, point shooting vs aimed fire, lower cap vs higher cap, .45's not being the "sword of Todd", staying aggressively determined and focused, etc.

Personally, I think carry what youre comfortable with, as ultimately, youre the one who has to deal with reality, if it should come along.

"Reality" is just that too, "reality'', whether or not youre realistic in your expectations of it. It will be what youre dealt when the time comes, and you will have to deal with it, right then and there, with what you brought along, both in tools and skills.

If you dont practice as realistically as possible on a regular basis with what you carry, its probably not going to matter much what you do carry. Everyone is a great shot (well, everyone likes to think they are :) ) standing still and leisurely shooting those little groups on bulleye targets at the range. If thats your reality, you may want to rethink things a little.

Choices are made every day good, bad, and indifferent. Prosper or perish either way its your choice.

I know that the stats show volient encounters usually are ended by 2-3 shots but I still love high capacity guns. So which camp are you in? Several rounds of hard hitting .45's or .357 mag's or 13+ rounds of .40 or 9mm?
Well, it's not uncommon for victims to be attacked by two or more thugs.
And "one-shot-stops" are no so common, so each thug might need several rounds to stop them.
And even the best shooters miss occassionally.

So I generally don't feel comfortable carrying a lower capacity handgun: which I define as less than 8 rounds.

My CC and HD gun is a S&W M&P9 with a 17 round capacity, so I guess I fall into more little bullets category.

From what I can tell the practical difference in "stopping power" between 9mm and .45 is so marginal that I would rather have the one that affords me more ammo and less recoil. Cheaper ammo too.

If someone wants a big fat .45 that's fine with me. I have a .45, but just don't want to spend the money to feed it. ;)

You should really try to avoid driving into the middle of a riot.

"When a gang of 10 is carjacking you, 6 or 7 rounds might not cut it."

You won't need to shoot all ten. Just shoot the leader then ask "who's next?"
