Hi Im new here, but I've always liked guns, can anyone tell me where I can gat a makarov? russian bulgarian or chinese i dont care as long as it is a 9mm mak.

hi Grassman, howdy! that was quick!
there are no pawnshops that take guns here, im in the philippines and most gun owners here get the 45 cal 1911s.

Yeah - fewer Mak's in circulation, down from the heyday of the mid 90's to maybe 2004. Also, obtaining decent ammo is more hit and miss.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Bulgy Mak, but with ammo supplies tightening, there is no noticeable cost advantage it has anymore over 9mm.

I know, ive never seen one befor, its too fraustrating, but seems handy since its small, and walther is hard to find and expensive, not to mention not in 9mm..does it have a different ammo? is mak 9mm different from 9mm parabelum?

The 9MM parabellum or Luger is 9x19 and uses a .356 bullet. The 9MM Makarov is 9x18 and uses a .364 bullet.
They are not interchangeable.

thaks NCsmitty, that is another disapointment form me. not even the chinese maks? guess its gonna be 1911's for me. any alternative for 9mm that is about same size as maks.

And are about 4 times the price as a Mak. If you're looking for the 9mm Makarov caliber there are other pistols that use that round. It's not limited just to the Makarov pistol.

CZ82, if you can get an steady supply of 9X18mm fodder...who was it that had loaded some (fairly hot ) JHP's in 9X18??Was it Georgia arms or Buffalo Bore???Or am I completely wrong???

1911 colt series 80 General Officers model bright stainless steel, Kimber ultra carry II, Para Ord. p14 Gun Rights, Springfield xd 45, Little 2 inch S&W. Stag arms 2T. Mossburg 500. Cond. 1 only..

those things cost more expensive than a car here in the philippines, they'd cost about $5000...looking at norinco guns but i think ill wait tilll i can save sum more, all i have is a bush master m16 battle rifle and i need a smaller gun so that my wife can handle it, not very safe here...

9X18 ammo is NOT hard to get. You can order it online like any other ammo and Winchester and Hornady both sell ammo in 9X18. And there are at least a dozen other manugacturers you can get it from too. Wolf ammo is also cheap and the Maks will eat that all day long. THe Makarovs themselves are very fine weapons. If you can get one I would highly recommend it. They are a very viable defensive piece. There are better arms for sure but the Makarov is reliable as an anvil and very accurate.

If its legal, i will part with a few of them for about 4k. heck, i'll even pay for shipping.

no papers yet, but if i can get one legaly at 4k ill see if we can ship it out,

anybidy have experience with norinco 1911's? hows the performance on those, they come cheap here, bout $425 more or less.

......

aint seen a mak in 2 years, get a hungarian pa63 ,shoots the mak round, real popular round these parts, local store sells em by the box, also a polish p64 might suit you ,same round just smaller grip and steel frame,i shoot the pa63 better though.sold the p64,had 2 pa63"s my uncle has one,i kept one,he ccw his calls it his james bond gun.good luck

Yeah the P-64 is more like a Walter lookalike. I own one and I'm reasonably happy with it. It's my first blow-back design pistol and the recoil is surprising for such a small round. 9x18 isn't hard at all to find. I just ordered 500 rounds from Ammo To Go for a little less than $100 including tax and shipping. It's the Brown Bear so it's maybe a small notch better quality than Wolf...but still cheapo.

The PA-63 is another good option. It's a totally different framed pistol than the P-64 and reminds me more of the .380 Bersa design. You can find both the PA-63 and the P-64 in "unissued" condition for about $180 out the door.

Guys, he's in the P.I., fer goshsake!

Personally, I haven't a clue what's legal, what's easy or hard to find or whether they can even arrange a private import from Gun Broker or the like there. The only time I was ever even in that neighborhood was a brief layover at Subic Bay 40-odd years ago.

His range of viable options is gonna be a good deal different from ours, obviously. Why the Norinco 1911 is obviously being imported there while their Mak and Tok clones might not be is a mystery to me.

AMZ, I can tell you how I can go about getting a Makarov or any of several other options here, what the ammo availability situation is in the area where I live and the approximate costs of those but how any of that might be of any material use to you in your situation I can't imagine.

The best advice I can offer is that you try connecting with a club or shooter's web board in the Philippines. You might also try Googling for firearms importers, wholesalers and retailers in your area for a better idea of what's available and what they cost.

I'd really like to help you out, but with no idea of what the realities are in the P.I. there's no way I could tell you how to go about getting a Mak, or any other type of handgun for that matter.

I'm sorry to disappoint you but the Makarov, while it's a great choice, is not practical in the Philippines. The 9x18 Makarov round is just not available there. Even if you can import the ammo legally, the cost would be prohibitive. I could be wrong but I think the closest country to the Philippines that still uses it is Vietnam. I have a friend who bought one of my East German Maks several years ago and who visits the Philippines regularly but will be returning for good in the near future. We've already talked about him selling it back to me. He said it would be easier to just buy another gun when he gets there because of the 9x18 ammo problem. As much as he loves his Mak, I'm willing to bet he'll buy a 9mm or a 1911 .45 ACP pistol.

Thanks! you guys are realy lucky to own a mak, ive been looking for one since i was in highschool, if i could find a 380 cal i guess i could use it but its still hard to find 380 here, though there are some guys from intel that use them, i guess if i ever find one for 9mm id have to take it to some of the local smiths but the next problem will be if they can modefy it to fit with 9mm parabelum...just bought a 1911 norinco yesterday shoots fine but i want the mak more.

The Makarov platform isn't a workable platform for conversion to the 9x19 cartridge.

It "straight blow-back" operating system isn't designed to handle the pressures involved. Attempting such a conversion would be both fruitless and very dangerous, IMO.

There are several makes and models of pistols already being made in 9x19 Parabellum which are every bit as compact and which incorporate the attractive features such as DA/SA trigger action and the "decocking/safety" mechanism similar to the Makarov.

IMO, you'd be much better served with one of them.

The OP didn't say he wanted a souless Kahr or Glock for CCW and to maximize caliber for size. He said he wanted a Makarov. Its a good gun that is stone cold reliable, accurate and well suited for carry and self defense. Get one while you still are able.

Kumusta AMZ, I spent two years in the PI and spoke with several people about firearms. Sorry your gun laws do not allow a larger variety of firearms. I don't really have any advice or suggestions, but would like to say hi and good luck. I hope you are able to find what you want.

Ammo was brought up, can you get reloading supplies in the PI? Shooting anything but 22 LR is cost prohibitive pretty much everywhere which is why so many people reload (and more people are starting every day). I don't remember seeing anything available when I was there, but I wasn't really looking either.

No argument on its being a good weapon or its suitability for those tasks.

However, if he can't find ammo for it that's pretty much moot, isn't it?

My comments were directed to his seeming misconception that one could be somehow converted to use the 9x19 ammo that is apparently plentiful and easily obtained in the P.I..

Being a practically inclined sort myself, I'd assumed that at least a part of his reasoning for wanting one would involve using it in some fashion. That seemed to me to be implicit in some of his other comments, including the one that mentioned his wife.

If he just wants a Mak to have a Mak, mazel tov! The problem seems to be in finding one where he is, and I can't help him with that.

All I was trying to do was offer some more seemingly-viable options for their situation in case he or his spouse might actually need something to defend themselves with.

I don't know what reloading is like in the PI, but its easy to cut down 9MM Luger brass to 18MM and load the 9MM Mak bullets.
