I probably need to get a Makarov. I'm taking my wife out to dinner tomorrow, and will try to explain this and another purchase I have planned. Assuming no serious resistance on her part, my choices seem to be the Polish or Bulgarian models. Any tips or suggestions between these two? Both are advertised as being pretty much unissued. Thanks.

I have 11 Makarovs and 3 Polish P-64s.
So you know I like them both.
Get the Makarov.
It's a fine all around gun.
Accurate, reliable, well made and cheap to buy and shoot.
It does everything well, except some people think it's a bit underpowered.
I don't carry one (except in the cars sometimes) because for about the same weight and size I can carry a Kimber 45.
But I would feel well armed if I did carry a Makarov.
It's fun to shoot and handles reloads well.
I like the P-64 for it's size, accuracy and reliability. (some have had trouble with the gun's safety)
Sometimes I'll carry the P-64 because of it's size.
It's not a comfortable gun to shoot because of the kick but it is fun to shoot. (just not 200 rounds at a time )

Makarovs are stellar.......the Polish guns are a Walther/FEG copy. Not that thats a bad thing...but Id rather get an SMC series FEG if thats what you want.
The PM/Real Mak.......is a great little gun. Youll here about odd failures of this and that kind on rare occasions...but they are truly rare occasions.
Shoot well.

I guess my question would be why buy a P-64 when you could have a Bulgy??
Dan, I've been carrying the 1911 for close to twenty years. I just recently bought a Springfield XD-9 and I've replaced my 1911 primary gun with the XD. I've also replaced my BUG which was the Kel-Tec P-3AT with my Bulgarian Makarov.
To be honest with you, I'd feel just as comfortable using my Makarov as my carry gun. It's super accurate and very, very reliable. Buy one and enjoy it. You'll be happy you did.

First, thanks for the education and the tips. My wife is right, I DON'T know everything. Still...
Second, I got the "geen light" for the Makarov at dinner tonight ("Yeah, sure, I just bought some bathing suits.") On some fundamental level it seems unfair that I felt compelled to ask first and she did not (which I pointed out), but who cares? One new Mak will soon be on the way. Outstanding!

Yeah, but the Makarov is a more reliable gun. Why would you carry an inferior weapon. Good way to get yourself killed if you ask me.
I have two a "Simson-Suhl" that's pretty much a safe queen, and an IJ-70 both are 9x18mm the IJ simply cannot be stopped probably have near 4000 rounds through it everything from 120gr hp to 90gr xtp without a single, not even one ever problem, no FTF, no FTE.
