A man remains hospitalized Thursday night after allegedly shooting himself with a police officer's gun.

Authorities found the 24-year-old in front of the Kyle community's city offices with a dead baby.

The 24-year-old man is a local resident.

Police say he was baby-sitting the infant and two other children when the events unfolded Thursday morning.

"It's a wonderful small historic town. I love to be here. I'm very surprised at what happened here," Kyle resident Tonico Vanalli said.

With nearly 20,000 people, the city of Kyle is not so small anymore.

Now, the town is dealing with a tragic event in a very public place.

Vanalli says I saw a person in the city hall parking lot. I don't know if it was the same person. He was on the ground and in his underwear," Vanalli said.

That man was 24-year-old Brian Twine.

An investigator believes Twine left the house frantically failing to put on clothes.

It was 7:30 a.m. when authorities found him with a lifeless 6-month-old boy believed to be his brother.

"At that time, he was screaming, 'The baby is not breathing. The baby is not breathing,'" Sgt. Allen Bridges with the Hays County Sheriff's Office said.

After taking him home to dress, the officer then took Twine to headquarters for questioning. The events turned worse.

"The officer and the man stepped out of the car. There was an altercation here in front of the police department at which time the man was able to take the officer's weapon away from him, and he has shot himself," Bridges said.

Not the type of violence expected in a place known for its small town appeal.

"Definitely, Kyle is growing. But I don't think what happened today is a sign of the growth of Kyle. It's a very sad thing that happened. I wish it never happened here in Kyle," Vanalli said.

An autopsy is expected to be performed on the baby Friday.

The Texas Rangers and Hays County Sheriff's Office are helping with the investigation.

Twine remains at Brackenridge in critical condition.
