I was at the LGS the other day &saw a Henry Arms " Mares Leg " Handgun! I checked it out & made sure it was not a SBR! I found out Rossi is making them in. .357mag, .45colt& .44 mag. also listed as Handguns! The Henry was real nice & all the Rossi guns I have owned were great. Has anyone seen or shot these guns? What do you think? A gimmick or good collection item? Or shooter?

Well, I have 50+ guns, including 25+ handguns.
But I don't have a Mares Leg, and never will.

That's my opinion of them.

Pick one up. Try to aim it one-handed. Then try to align it two handed. We've sold quite a few and my bet is most of them will never be fired.

BTW..just found season 1 of "Wanted Dead or Alive" starring Steve McQueen. $2.50 in the local WalMart bargain bin. First "mares leg".

I like mine

I have a Ranch Hand in 357 mag. I like it and it shoots well for me.
As far as accuracy goes. I hit a ground hog in the head (useing a 38 special ) from about 48 to 52 yards. Mine shoots high. But if I aim with the front sight at 1/2 sunset it works great.

I have a 22 Mare's Leg. It can be fun, but they are not easy to shoot well. I am still toying with the idea of putting some sort of red dot on it for plinking.

22-rimfire

Cradle it in your arm like a baby. Both hands should be touching each other. Then bring it up to your cheek and fire like a rifle. It is very steady and easy to shoot.
You just have to think outside those little boxes everyone loves so much. If it is different or new some people will cal it junk.
Think back to the intro of (combat tupperware) GLOCK. Or any polymer frame pistol. I bet when the 1911 was first introduced people hated the look and called it junk. until it got popular.

You have to careful in using the term Mares Leg. That is a copy right name and it is possible to get the forum on a little warm water. None of the Rossi's nor Henry's are " Mares Legs ". I don't know what Henry's calls theirs but even Rossi calls theirs the Ranch Hand.:)

Ron James

Henry calls it a Mares Leg . And JB customs is trying to sue them. You can look it up. On the net.
Funny thing , When he tried to sue taurus it was all over the web. Now that he is sueing Henry nobody knows???

The origins of the chopped down M92 Winchester called the "Mare's Laig" actually go back to a series called Trackdown starring Robert Culp. Steve McQueen took it from there, making changes along the way (which is why the pistol has different loop styles during the series).
JB Customs is suing several folks. The story of just what he was doing is interesting, to say the least. Eagle Squadron no longer uses the name; calling their version the "Bounty Hunter Reproduction". The Puma version is called the "Bounty Hunter" and, as mentioned, the Rossi is called the Ranch Hand. Henry is claiming the name Mare's Leg wasn't copyrighted and points to the fact that these pistols were called that back in the 50's.

I got the .44 Magnum and I've put 200 rounds through it so far. I enjoy shooting it, impractical as it is. Since we cannot carry a rifle or shotgun loaded in a vehicle here, the Ranch Hand is suitable for a truck gun.

I don't think I'd bother with a .22 version since there are so many other .22s I would enjoy shooting more.

DW Fan, thanks for the mention of Trackdown, I've been trying to remember that series for a while now. Just for me and my self, I've been trying to list all the westerns just for heck of it.

I have the Rossi .357.

and the Henry 22LR.

Fun guns.
Like most guns they are only as good as the shooter. Fast COM hits at 10 yards, shooting from the hip, is quite easy with a little practice.

It's interesting that three ladies I taught to shoot bought the Henrys after I let them shoot mine.
The first lady backed up to 52 yards and was quite deadly with the gun. Then she had to get one of her own.

One of the other ladies is a retired movie stunt woman. She knew Steve McQueen well and worked with him on "Wanted Dead or Alive". When she saw and shot my guns she had to have one.

The third lady is a top world champion Quarter Horse trainer and rider. She's looking for a scabbard to carry her Mare's Leg on a horse.

Now that I am looking at this concept, can anyone help me with the information about scope mounts? I am probably going to need a RD or something to help these old eyes. That Henry in .22mag.might be a good hunter. Thanks for the help!

The Henry 22 has the grooved receiver just like the full sized rimfire rifle. I look at M2's photo of the Henry 22 with some interest. Thanks for that photo M2.

I also found your comments interesting as well. I just bought my Henry ML 22 in December and have not really shot it much yet.

The ML may not be the most practical firearm. But you know when you have many firearms already, a little diversity is fun.

A 357 mag version has a lot of appeal to me too. But I need to get a better handle on actually hitting something with some regularity with my 22 before stepping up in caliber, cool or not.

I bought the Rossi first and mostly shoot 38 Special.
The gun is so much fun, even though I reload a LOT of 38, I was going through a lot of 38/357reloads.

Amost immediately I thought I'd really like to have this gun in 22LR. So when the Henry came out, like the Rossi, I bought the first one I found.:)

Those Henry 22 ML's are so impractical that they are probably selling all they can make. :) Might make a pretty fair "survival gun".

No where on the Henry does it say "Mares Leg".

The generic term is lowercase "mare's leg" or "mare's laig" used by the TV show. One maker of custom replicas has trademarked capital letter "Mare's Leg" as a tradename for his version and wants to protect his "brand".

I would say the mare's laig would appear to appeal primarily to fans of Steve McQueen (Josh Randall of Wanted Dead or Alive), Sheena Easton (Crystal Hawks of The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.) and Gina Torres (Zoe Washburn of Firefly) see http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Firefly#Winchester_Model_1892_.22Mare.27s_Leg.22.
