Marine Who Tampered Parachutes Sentenced
Marine Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Tampering With Parachutes

The Associated Press

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. Aug. 7 —
A Marine who admitted cutting parachute lines before a training jump was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison by a military judge who told him he can still become a productive citizen.

Lance Cpl. Antoine D. Boykins admitted cutting suspension lines on 13 of the 22 parachutes that were to be used in the exercise Sept. 21. He said he knew someone could be killed or injured because reserve chutes fail nearly half the time they're used.

Three Marines were injured in the jump's first wave, and the exercise was canceled.

The judge, Col. Alvin Keller, deliberated about five hours before sentencing Boykins. He also cut Boykins' rank to private and said he would be dishonorably discharged. The sentence must be formally approved by the commander of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.

"It's clear to this court that you have a great deal of natural ability and you are lucky to have a number of people who support you," said Keller, who heard testimony from Boykins' family as well as members of his church in Baltimore.

Boykins, 21, had pleaded guilty to nine counts of reckless endangerment, four counts of aggravated assault and one count of destruction of government property. He could have gotten 31 years in prison.

Keller told Boykins to heed the advice of his pastor, the Rev. Stephen Andrew Tillett, who testified he told Boykins to find other Christians in prison and stick with them, and to take college courses while he serves his sentence.

"You can still be a productive citizen in this country if you take advantage of what your pastor has recommended that you do," Keller said.

Boykins will be eligible for parole after serving one-third of his sentence.

He was originally charged with attempted premeditated murder, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault and other crimes, but agreed to plead guilty and testify against another Marine charged in the case.

Prosecutors said he deserved the maximum sentence. "This is a case about treachery," said Lt. Col. Stuart Couch.

He said Boykins was angry because he had been punished and his pay was docked when he returned late from leave.

Defense lawyer Kimberly Tarver of Baltimore pleaded for a lighter sentence, and asked that Boykins be transferred to military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., so he can get counseling.

Before sentencing, Boykins told Keller he "made the worst decision I could ever imagine."

"Somewhere along the way, I went left where I should have gone right," Boykins said, reading from a prepared statement. "I was wrong and I am sorry."

Boykins is expected to testify against Cpl. Clayton A. Chaffin, 28, from Franklin, Ohio, who is charged with 31 counts, including reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, conspiracy and drug charges. Charges against a third Marine were dismissed in April

Reserve the penthouse at Fort Leavenworth for this moron. Hope the prison population gives him a welcome party which is appropriate for someone who sabotaged the chutes of airborne jarheads.

Maybe they'll arrange for him to spend some quality time in the exercise yard with a few former airborne.

I agree with Vic Vega but I would make him jump with one of the ones he
cut. With no reserve of course.

In the Army, they would have immediately taken him off rigger duties after an Article 15, and started the process to reclassify him into another MOS, for this very reason. I wonder why the Marines didn't?

Lance Cpl. Antoine D. Boykins is the genius w/the the jumpwings on his big man chest.

Maybe he and Sgt. Hasan Akbar can be bunkies at Ft. Leavenworth.

Me? I'd prefer to be the one to toss them out of the back of a Happy Herc @ around 15,000 ft...sans 'chute.

Time to give this boy some HANO training.

Oh.. yes... well.. HALO id of course High Altitude Low Opening....

HANO same thing but with the word NO.

What an Adam Henry.

They should use him for target practice. Or better yet, give him a parchute and a reserve with the lines cut on both.

The vileness of that act cannot be overstated to those who haven't served in an Airborne unit. On big jump days, you have to rely on chutes that were packed by riggers, and you have to trust them as if you had packed them yourself. Attempted murder in 13 cases, as far as I'm concerned.

Take him up to 10K feet, lay out 14 packed 'chutes.

"13 of those 14 have cut lines. You pick ONE and jump. If it opens properly, and you land safely, 30-to-life. If it doesn't, oh,well......too bad"

I understand what you're saying, Marko. But I've never served in an airborne unit, yet I have NO TROUBLE understanding the vileness of this pr**k's act.

I believe this is what comes of the dumbing down being done in the schools and the general "enlightened" value system we have sunk to. To speak plainly, this was the act of an incredibly selfish and stupid savage (in terms of his morality What exactly is it that they teach in his church?)

It is the JUDGE that your remark really applies to. I'd have BOTH Boykins, the genius AND the judge ("you can still become a good citizen...." -- he'd probably say the same to Hitler!) try jumping with his parachute with cut lines.

Let the judge and the rest like him reap the reward of their kind of enlightened compassion.

Makes my blood just BOIL!

(And yet THEY preach to US!

Fox was reporting this morning that he was upset at being disciplined by his CO for a late return to his unit. Weekend liberty or a leave of some sort, perhaps.

Being a former jarhead, I got that sense from Fox's report. I wouldn't be surprised that he was up for 'office hours' as we called it way back when.

I thought 20 years was okay, but then I read above that he's eligible for parole after about 7 years. As my tagline says, whiskey tango foxtrot?!?! He could have killed 10 people and 7 years is all?

After seeing his photo and noticing that he is black, he shouldn't be held responsible since he obviously came from a broken family and lived in a slum. Besides, they had no right to dock his pay merely because he was late returning from leave.

What kind of Marine Corps do they think they'll make if they start holding people responsible for their own actions????? Chesty Puller must be rolling over in his grave!!!!:what:

Personally, I'd turn the sucker over to the guys who had the chutes this yang messed with and would ask no questions when they returned the body.:D
