I am a approaching the age 60 mark. The factory leaf sights on my Marlin 336 are getting too fuzzy to center the front sight to shoot well. I am looking for something better. I like the western look of the rifle without a scope. I have looked at Williams peep, Fire Sight, Lyman, and Skinner. Can anyone help me make a choice.

I went with Williams peeps and I think they call it the fire sight in the front - it's a red fiber optic. Huge improvement for me.

hilltopper55,

I'm in the same boat as you with a few more years as well....Using the factory sights on my Marlin 1895G is an on and off deal. There are days that I can do well with the Factory sights. Others.....well, let's just day the sights are there, but I can't see them.

I put a Williams 5D peep on the rear and it was like night and day! A real improvement and it kept the weapon looking like a levergun should... Williams makes a good sight and if I were to do it over again, I'd get the adjustable model, the FP...a few buck more but far more precise. The 5D is a good sight, but it takes a bit to get it dialed in. Once there, you lock it down and you're good to go....until you change loads!

I recently tried a Dot system, but that was a dissapointment.....but that's another thread too! Sure had high hopes with that thing...Oh well, I still have a short scope that I can use...

Good luck with you sight quest,

Wade

If I remember correctly the Williams model made for the 336, is the same for almost all Marlin leverguns, (including my 45-70) . If there's a scope tap on top, it will fit and can be installed in about 5 min., (including coffee break)....You might need a hammer extention as the sight can project over the hammer some, making it difficult to get a good grip on it. You'll need one of the old model extentions, since the part made by Marlin now has changed and will not work on older Marlins. I'd get with Brownells or Midway for the part....

Good luck with you shooter!!

I use the Lyman 66 on my 336. I read an article decades ago in SWAT magazine about an "alternative assault rifle". I believe theirs was based on a 94, but the gun had synthetic furniture, a Lyman peep sight and a large loop lever, and I was smitten. So, I built my own from a 336. Looked REAL tactical with the gold pimp trigger.

I really wanted a skinner sight, but found a williams 5d on sale for about 1/3 the price. It installs easily and works great. Click adjustment would have been nice (the FP model) but not work the extra $$ to me. Either way, I shoot a lot better with a peep than the leaf. The fire sight is nice and eye catching, but I kind of preferred the narrower profile of my old blade.

Come to think of it, you might consider something like a very small red dot. It gets harder and harder as we age to focus on multiple things - the rear sight, the front sight and the target). Ever try one? Until I sold my 336, it had a Burris FastFire II. It's 1.8" long, less than an inch tall, and one inch wide. I don't think it looks out of place.

Take a look at this thread http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/topic/361511/gonew/1

They have a couple of pics, and as noted, on a 336, the FastFire II sits flush with the back of the receiver.
