Tip down folder is worn in strong side hip pocket against pocket seam. If for some reason you don't have a belt the knife is worn clipped IWB in same postion.

1) Folder is indexed with thumb that finds it along the pocket seam, folder is clinched in web of hand.
2) Folder drawn closed in a hammer fist grip and punched into hip area just in front of pocket. This does two things, first it seats the folder in the hand, two it is a failsafe since if you were fumbling this is how you would naturaly try to trap the falling knife.
3) Hammer fist your opponent with the closed knife if deadly force is not warranted or if they are too close to deploy the blade. If deadly force is warranted deploy the blade in any manner you wish. We advise doing so with your thumb in front of you.

The MCS draw lessens the chance of a dropped folder during stress. It also allows you to draw the knife without having to go out to the side or behind you which we have found is more likely to allow your opponent to smother your draw or result in a dropped knife.

There are only three ways to know if your folder has opened-

1) You hear it which is very unlikely under combat stress.
2) You see it, this is the best way, what we have found is that people who rely on popping their knife open with their thumb or kinetic opening have frustrating failures that result in them using more and more force out to the side where they stare at the knife instead of their opponent.
3) You feel it cut your fingers upon attempting your first cut and figure out the lock has failed to engage.

Common wisdom dictates that if you know you have to use a knife for self defense it should be a fixed blade.(we have some interesting findings in reference to drawing those as well)

The reality is that in many places fixed blades are illegal or at least frowned upon. This leaves many people with the tactical folder as their option. Don't think that you will rise to the occasion, in fact you will default to your level of training.

Excellent post.

I know from another post that you prefer the Spyderco Military for SD. I love mine.

What fixed blade (small 3.5 inches) do you like?

In order of cost $-

CRKT Polkowski Kasper Companion- best inexpensive FB fighter every produced. Like hens teeth to find now. Sheaths sucked.

Spyderco Lum Tanto- awesome blade, leather sheath made no sense, again think hens teeth.

Polkowski Polecat- my EDC for the last year or so, I will be picking up a Bodyguard at the NY show which may replace this.

Emerson La Griffe- IMO this is the one knife that everyone should carry EDC.

Funny thing is that with fixed blades I think the carry/deployment option is more important than the knife. I have seen more people killed in the ghetto with a steak knife than any other edged weapon. Although box cutters lead in assaults. (cuts don't kill like stabs do)

Say you got yourself some good kydex for a Victorinox Parring Knife, you would be well served for SD purposes.

Mercop....thanks for the information. We obviously have very similar taste.

I have the CRKT Polkowski Kasper Companion, but I don't carry it because the sheath does absolutely suck!

Emerson La Griffe- IMO this is the one knife that everyone should carry EDC.

I do....I love mine.

I have always wanted a real Bud Nealy knife, but I have yet to scratch up the dough for one. I like his designs, he uses great metal and his sheaths are outstanding.

Funny, depending on how the show goes for me in NY I might pick something up from Bud. We must have been seperated at birth.

For that CKRT get a hold of Mike Sastre at River City Sheaths or Eric at On Scene Tactial and tell them I sent you. They will do you right.

wave my emerson HD-7 backwards, or soon my super karambit forwards.

cant stand tip down (on a folder) carry!

favorite fixed blade SD knife = MOD ayoob razorback

We had a lot of people who liked this and that before the Folder into the Fight drill. Changed my thoughts on a lot of different knives.

Mike is a member at THR and you can PM him with sheath requests. He's made sheaths for me for my Kasper.

I carry a 4" Nealy Pesh Kabz as a fixed blade in an IWB over my right hip pocket from time to time and find it to be an excellent setup.

That is the model I am looking at from Bud. I didn't know Mike was a member here. He is one of my sponsors and had attended several MCS courses.

Hey George,

Good to see you here!! HSO's a longtime friend and one of the voices of sanity around here. I've been meaning to contact him to suggest he bring your team to the Knoxville area for a MCS seminar. He's already had some shooting courses (with a little knife thrown in after hours) and his group of people would highly benefit from your dose of reality.

HSO,

MCS "Folder Into The Fight" Drill is a MUST DO for anyone even contemplating using a folder for self defense. Thes guys have my HIGHEST recommendation. They are filling a neglected niche in the SD continuim.

Ethan Becker said he'd come if I organized something so why don't we plan on you and yours coming to Knoxville sometime within the next 6 months. PM me with schedule/pricing options.
