Hi all:

I hit the range this afternoon to test a used SP 01 Tactical that I might buy. The pistol comes with two mags and the intended use of that pistol would be range use/IPSC competition, so I need at least a couple of them more. The stock CZ mags are pricey and I'm looking at Mec-Gar as an alternative.

I googled a bit to see if I could see some reviews on these mags and didn't find much useful information, so your experiences with them are welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Mec-gar makes great mags, and is even an OEM for some pistol brands.

Just saw a video on Youtube where a guy was testing some of these for an SP 01 and he said they didn't drop freely as the standard mags do...

They looked like they were good quality, though.

I use MecGar for all my CZ's. To me they're interchangeable with the original CZ's. Price is way, way better.

As noted, Mec-Gar makes CZ's mags, and makes the same (or very similar mags) under their own brand name.

Mec-Gar offers 16, 17, and 19 round 9mm mags. They have some special OW-FRICTION models, and they'll probably work. Your best source of info will be the CZ FORUM, here: http://www.czforumsite.info/

One source of Mec-Gar AND CZ Factory mags: http://www.cdnnsports.com/magazines.html?brand=670 Good service, good products, and a FIXED single shipping charge regardless of how many mags you order -- I think it's $9.99.

Agree with Mr Sherrill, CDNN Sports is a good place to get em. Also, I got some very reasonably priced from Midsouth Shooters Supply, like dealing with them allot. Think they were $24.95 but that was last year.

I only use factory mags with a few exceptions: AR15's and MecGar pistol mags (excepting 1911's and then it's Wilson's). You would b e surprised by how many manufacturers use MecGars as standard equipment. I have a handful for my CZ-75 and they work great. They don't miss a beat and compare well to the factory offerings (which may be MecGars, I can't recall.)

RE: CZ magazines...

I've had a BUNCH of CZ-75s and CZ-75Bs over the years, and know a bit about the magazines used in those guns -- but know very little about the newer hi-caps used with the SP-01 guns.

CZ originally made their own magazines, and at times have farmed out production to other companies. I know, for example, that Pro-Mag made some of their factory mags for a while, and had a number of them. They were indistinguishable from other CZ "factory" mags and performed beautifully. (They came in packages that identified them as CZ factory mags, but on the reverse side of that same page you could see a small Pro-Mag stamp.) I've NEVER had a problem with CZ-made or CZ-outsourced mags.

For the past 6-8 (maybe longer) CZ has had Mec-Gar make MOST of their factory mags. Mec-Gar also makes their own version, under their brand name. The mags are NOT identical -- the CZ and Mec-Gar branded mags often had slightly different followers.

During the years when CZ was making their own or using someone other than Mec-Gar, Mec-Gar's versions worked well in the standard CZ-75B model, but would NOT work in the CZ-75 (called "pre-B"). Mags made for Tanfoglio guns often worked in the pre-Bs, however. The difference was that the top of mag channel was narrower in the pre-B models, and the Mec-Gar mags woud not insert fully, or if inserted, would not drop free. (We've since learned how to open up that area with a flat file...)

Mags for the 75s (pre-Bs) can be purchased from CZ-USA. You can use Mec-Gars for most other models.

Mags for the compact CZ models are harder to find, and when bought from CZ, more costly. Pro-Mag magazines for the compact models, unlike other Pro-Mags made for the full-size guns, work well. Back during the ban, a bunch of us used the CZ-75B compact mags, in .40, as hi-cap mags for the 9mm compacts. They worked beautifully, without the usual Pro-Mag issues.

Note: "compact" mags made for Tanfoglio guns won't work in CZ; the Tanfoglio mags are shorter, and won't lock into place. Mags made for small-frame Tanfoglio guns work beautifully in CZs, and vice versa.

Unless there's been a change, the full-size models, ranging from the 10-round mags, to the 16-round mags, all use the same springs. (That may be the case with the 18 or 19 round mags, too -- I just don't know.) I would NOT expect the very-high cap mag springs to last as long as the others, especially if left loaded for long periods.

Thanks for your inputs. Looks like it's worth purchasing the Mec-Gars.

I'm not worried about the springs being compressed for a long time since the intended use of this pistol would be range/competition. For HD I keep my trustworthy Star 30M.

I'm certainly not going to claim they make them for Wilson, but they look VERY similar.

I'm the same way. Mec-Gar for pretty much all my pistols, though CZ is one of the few where it doesn't save you a whole lot of money over factory mags. It's still a good buy, though.

I'll just echo what others have already said, Mec Gar mags are great and most companies these days use Mec Gar mags on at least some of their pistols.
