Michigan: New legislation would allow concealed carry without a permit

The sponsors of the bill ( House Bills 5301-5304) say that the current requirements is an inconvenience to gun owns and that it cost money. The penalties for unlawful possession will stay the same and would apply to those not now legally allowed to carry concealed.

"LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Legislation just introduced in Michigan would allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons without a government issued permit. The bills were introduced Tuesday by four House Republicans."

Recently passed in Kansas and amazingly the streets are not flowing with blood after all.

Had a similar bill introduced last year. The representative who sponsored the bill was run out of a job, along with her lover (another congress-critter) for misconduct and misappropriation of funds. Needless to say, that bill died silently and forgotten.

I'm hoping this bill stands a better chance.

Since it serves as a background check and avoids the purchase permit requirement, that's the primary reason I'll keep it.

What I'd REALLY like to see is if we do get Constitutional Carry is the elimination of PFZs, but since that isn't likely to happen, let CPL holders be exempt from PFZs (currently only available to law enforcement) and lower the cost of the license, or extend the time from five years to lifetime.

Do you really think the state of MI will give up:
$100 new or renew permit every 4-5 years depending when you apply
$15 fingerprints
$15 photo on permit

I DON'T THINK SO

$15 fingerprints doesn't go to the state. County, yes.
$15 photo doesn't go to the state, either. Unless Walgreen's is a government entity and I was just unaware.

But if Constitutional Carry does pass, then yes, they will give that up. If they want to keep any of the money, they should capitulate at some level.

They made me bring 2 photos for the permit
Glad I made my own because when I got there they took a photo of me & that is what was used on permit $15.00 ---the county got the money.

When I went thru the 8 hour BS training--it cost me $150----does the state get a split of that $$ ?

When my wife and I got our CPLs the county clerk also took the photo for the license. It was done with a webcam.

That's mighty neighborly of you, Poper. But I make a trek about once a year from Michigan to Florida and back again, so until Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida all adopt Constitutional Carry, I'll keep my CPL.

Saw where Michigan, on 2/11, approved the use of suppressors while hunting.

Good deal! Hope their constitutional-carry proposal is approved as well.

The current list of states with permitless carry are Alaska, Arizona, Vermont, Maine, Kansas, and Wyoming. These states represent the extreme rural, frontier life away from civilization. I just don't see Michigan passing permitless carry because I don't see politicians in Detroit getting behind the concept of allowing people to carry without going through the bureaucracy because without that government wisdom, there would be mass chaos in the streets.

Oh wait, because of that perfect government wisdom, there already is chaos in Detroit. Hell, there's chaos just in Flint where the city's water is completely tainted with lead. If I was in Michigan and I wanted permitless carry, my slogan would be " If Lead in the water is okay, than Lead in our pockets should be too!"

If Michigan does pass it, they would be the biggest, most diverse, and most representative state in the country to do it and it would send shockwaves through to other states. I mean, Indiana would be so butthurt that Michigan went permitless before they did.

West Virginia is introducing permitless carry and I think it stands a good chance of passing as it's an election year, much better of a chance than Michigan.

I agree, it's a long shot that it even gets out of committee, let alone get Snyder's John Hancock. It was a hard enough time just to get the CPL reform bill passed. I don't see them allowing for permitless carry. I hope I'm wrong.

what I'm really interested for here in MI is repeal of "Defenseless victim zones" aka "gun free zones" which is up for consideration now. Our republican Gov. vetoed it as a knee jerk after Sandy hook. Hopefully he will sign it this time. I've already expressed my concerns to my state Sen. and Rep. being that with the Flint water crisis, ( buy the way brought to you by a Democrat emergency city manager appointed by our Gov.:banghead:) that if we don't pass some pro gun legislation now it's our last chance being that the next Gov. will surely be Democrat and it goes downhill after that for gun rights in our state.
