Here's a few of a #1 Mk. III Lee-Enfield, AKA "SMLE"...... This is one of many that were coming here in the early 1990's when Australia declared them surplus and started selling them all off. This one's not an all original matching numbers deal because it was rebuilt around the end of Australia's Lee-Enfield service rifle era, according to the serial number, according to Ian Skennerton in his book; "The Lee-Enfield Story". The receiver's 100 years old this year; it's a 1917 BSA production so that part of the rifle came from England originally, you can see where the new serial number was added and the old one crossed out. Pretty much all the rest is Australian including all the wood. The buttstock has several interesting cartouches including a 5/31 date (?) and that shield with a Kangaroo in it and the letters " A C" ( Australia Corps ?? ). At any rate, it's all rebuilt and had a brand new barrel installed and is a good, solid shooter although it hasn't been fired since October of 2003 according to my log book. The bayonet was purchased later and I have no idea of the provenance on that.
