There's the Saiga in .223, 7.62x39, and 7.62x51
The Minis in .223, 6.8 SPC, and 7.62x39
The M1A/M14, which gets my vote. I'd pick up an M1A Scout/Squad and be happy. Or a Standard/Loaded model. Or one of the Chinese rifles, if I found a good deal on one.
The M1 Garand
The M1 Carbine, another interesting option, though I am personally not a fan of pistol caliber carbines, and for all intents and purposes, the .30 Carbine round is a pistol caliber.
You could also get a Remington 7400 or 7600. One of them is a pump, the other is a semi-auto. They look like standard hunting rifles to most and I think Remington is even offering some models in .223 that take standard cap AR mags as well.
The Browning BAR would also qualify. It is available in a variety of hunting caliber including some pretty potent magnums. For general use, I'd stick to something like the .308 or .30-06.
The FN FNAR, which is basically the same thing as the BAR only offered through FN as a sharpshooting rifle in .308.
And of course on the same token, I think there are several other semi-auto hunting rifles offered by other companies. I think Benelli makes one, for example.
But like I said, I see no reason not to go with the M1A. There are other options, but none of them appeal to me nearly as much as the Springfield.
