So I went to the LGS on Saturday and found a Dan Wesson 445 supermag Alaskan guide special there ($900) in near perfect condition, no turn line, bank vault lock up ect.. as when ever I find something rare, I pretty much have to have it so I put it on lay away.

I went back in today to put more cash on it and saw an older gentleman talking with the store owner and pulled out a model 27. I listened to the owner telling him how the wear on the blueing was devaluing it, so I came over and asked to look at it. It turned out to be 27-2 and aside from the wear on the bluing and the grips, the thing was in great shape, timing was excellent, tight cylinder lock up, ect. mechanically in perfect condition. I chatted with the two for a bit, and then the store owner got distracted and attended to something else. The gentleman made it apparent that he wasn't interested in the price the store owner had offered him, so I asked what it was. He said $300. I told him I had $340 cash in my pocket if he still wanted to sell it and he agreed!

So I figured I would share my story and post pics of it and see what ya'll thought. I am pretty tickled to get an old pinned and recessed Smith, and am excited about the Dan Wesson too. she might no be the prettiest girl on the block, but she'll do.

Very nice.
I don't believe the grips are original. AFAIK M27-2 always had the target grips, not Magnas, with the exception of the 3.5".

I have a 8.375" M27 that came standard in a blue cardboard box, with the Magna grips, narrow trigger and hammer. It looked just like a shinny M28, except for the checkered topstrap and rib

That is the style of grip that came on the older Mdl 27's. With a little TLC that will be a wonderful gun at one heck of a price.

Nice s&w at a good price but that DW your wait'n for is the big prize and the price if its like new is about right. last series sold for around 1200 dollars. Those did have the good porting design for sure.

This was was an excellent deal!!! You paid about 45%-50% of its value. This is the kind of story that I love. You were not even looking for it; just overheard a conversation. You are one lucky duck!

if you did that here at a gun shop you would be ask to not come back. i bought a real nice shotgun like that at a gun shop here, but waited untill the store bought it and then ask what it would take to buy it right now, and got it for 50.00 over what it was bought for and it still was a super deal. eastbank.

Gunshops in my area are also like that. It would be considered rude to approach a customer offering a gun for sale to the store, until they had decided not to make the transaction

Sounds like you got a good deal on the Smith and the Dan Wesson! The 445 SuperMag is a fun caliber to shoot I think you'll enjoy it! Check out the Dan Wesson Forum for some more info on it.

I guess I should clarify things a bit, I specifically, out for respect for the store owner, made sure I knew the guy wasn't going to sell it to the store before I made my move. I also made sure not to try and convince him either way. And we left the property to make the transaction. I didn't want to burn bridges with the owner, as he has given me a lot of good deals in the past, including that Dan Wesson. I know the owner of the store isn't fond of revolvers, so he buys them low and usually sells them low as well to move them through quickly. Revolver lovers like me benefit from his practices.
