And so the chess pieces have been set up, the game is beginning and all await the outcome of the contest.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Do the feds push the issue and maybe risk violence or do they lay low, wait for an opportunity to make an example out of Montana residents who leave the state on business and get
caught up in a fed trap elsewhere.

I can't help but remember back to the Ruby Ridge debacle where the local DA sought to prosecute FBI agents in the murder of Vicki Weaver but were forced to back down by the Feds. Hopefully this time it will be different.

Wow

Having been raised in MT and having gone to College at MSU and leaving the state when I was 28, I have no idea where you all got that Montana summers are hot and the winters are cold.... Sure Winter lasted from October to April, but it was a dry cold. 40 below zero isnt that bad when it is dry.

Oddly enough, the summers were always pleasant, rarely getting over 100 degrees and the Gallatin valley was lush and green until late July. I lived within half an hour of 5 of the best trout streams in the world. There were 2 ski resorts within an hour and 7 mountain ranges ringed the valley. This was an incredible place to grow up. We had very little wind where I am from and the horses and cattle loved it.

Now if you are talking the eastern part of the state... Well, yeah, that is hell on earth. From Livingston, to Billings to Miles City to Wibaux, you have lots of wind, lots of cold, lots of driving to get to a town.

But, there is something great about hunting Prairie Dogs near Terry MT where there isn't a soul for miles and the road you took getting to the land hasn't had a car on it all day. There is that freedom where the wind blows through your hair on a lonely stretch north of Miles City and there is not a sound of another human being. The air is clear and the water clean.

When you get away from the towns like Bozeman, overrun by hippies and art dealers, you find the real men and women of Montana. Good folks who wave to you as you pass em by on a dusty road. The people who work hard, play hard and like nothing better than to go paddlefish snagging on the Yellowstone river.

This is where I grew up, near a town taken over by bistros and prissy coffee shops. But I remember the old Montana, Not ancient, just far enough back in my memory to remember the ranchers and farmers who looked you straight in the eye when talking to ya, and who's word was their handshake. This is the Montana I remember, where a steak filled a plate and the guy cooking it, more than likely raised it.

Those places exist still in Montana, but you have to leave my old hometown now and head east... into the plains.

yup...

...Big Sky indeed...

...the danged deer are so thick, you can't shoo' 'em away from the roads...
Look like cattle, grazin' in herds...
Good fer' you Montana!

I rest my case ....

:what: OMG!!!!

This bill is AWESOME! :D I need to start convincing my wife we're moving to Montana! :D

Man, I'm REALLY jealous that you have such wonderful legislators in Montana!

Yanno, I don't care if it is dry as dry can be 40 below zero still sounds mighty friggin cold lol

It got down to the mid 20's (overnight) here a couple weeks back. Other than that I don't think the days have been much colder than mid 50's all winter. Mostly in the lower 60's. But hey, it was a wet cold those few days. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D ;)

So when does this bill come up for a real vote?

Bill Passed Committee

A little update on the bill:

HB420

Looks like it passed a committee 16-1. Not sure when the full legislature votes on it.

Good luck to y'all in MT!

I ain't movin' there. No jobs. Rediculous drives from one place to another. All that for a silencer legal no where else? I don't think so.

But, I hope such obstinance to the FED spreads. I could live in the valley Boise, ID is in. If they went with you on that, I'd pack up and move once I'm outta school. I sure hope it passes, and the rebellious spirit moves to other states.

Oh, and the ability of MT to have a Constitution Party rep warms my heart in all kinds of ways. Good luck.

Oh, and what longeyes said, well, the next few years should be very interesting.

HB 420 has passed the second reading in the House, 75 Y to 22 N. (!) (The 3rd reading is usually a formality.)

This is the bill that would exempt Montana made firearms from federal regulations provided the firearm stays in Montana. It would also seem to include short shotguns and rifles, and silencers. But not machine guns or "destructive devices" with a bore diameter greater than 1 1/2" (the sponsor said he was trying to attract maximum votes so he excluded those, but invited the Judiciary committee to put 'em back in if they wanted).

Included in the Yea column were 22 Democrats, including the MSU poly sci dept. head. One bespotted Republican voted against it and about half the Democrats (several also managed to be absent or otherwise missed the vote).

That... would be excellent.

Passed 3rd Reading... off to the Montana Senate

As LibertyTeeth surmised, 3rd reading passed 83-17.

The bill now goes to the Montana Senate.

HB420

Amazing Does anybody know what the odds are that it will get passed by the Senate and then finally passed by the governor?

From what I have read on the Governor, he won't be the problem. The Senate there is made up of a fairly equal (R) and (D) mix, and since a lot of the (D)'s from what I hear are pro-RKBA in Montana, it will be how many of them are up for taking a cattle prod to the Federal Government.

Sola', what makes y'all HATE the Feds but continue to elect one of the Biggest, REALLY BIG government, nanny-state Senators of all time?

HB 420 (Koopman) was also heard. This would allow Montana-made firearms to
avoid federal regulation. Committee members asked why machine guns and
"destructive devices" such as guns with bores larger than 1.5" were omitted.
The sponsor replied that he personally thinks the Second Amendment applies to
these firearms as well, but he left them out of the bill to attract more
legislators. He said if the committee wants to add them back in as permitted
firearms to be manufactured in Montana he would have no problem with that.
That is about what I figured. Perhaps depending on if it sails through as it seems to be doing they will later make a serate bill or ammendment or something to add them as well?
