Arrest In Polk County Wildfire Sparked By Stump Shooting

DALLAS, Ore. - Officials have arrested a Salem man in connection with a Polk County wildfire sparked from a tree stump shot during target practice.

Reports say Eric Larkins, 40, and others were shooting at a tree stump during target practice Saturday, about 11 miles southwest of Dallas. Larkins was using a high-powered, military style, 50-caliber sniper rifle.

Reports say three apparently armor-piercing, tracer-type rounds three shots drove into a stump, and it started to smoke. The group tried to put it out, but the fire got out of control and they fled.

One member of the shooting party and an uninvolved witness called 911 to report the fire but did not claim responsibility.

Polk County Woods Contract Patrol Deputy Brian Dunkin conducted the investigation that led to Larkins' arrest on Tuesday (charges were not released). The Oregon Department of Forestry and Oregon State Police assisted. The Polk County Sheriff's Office has seized the rifle and ammunition that started the fire.

Fire reports indicate more than 420 acres burned, costing over $500,000 in fire suppression so far, and nearly $100,000 more each day the fire is fought.

Landowner Forest Capital estimates the damage to their property somewhere between $150,000 and $200,000 and growing.

At what point did the ability to formulate a grammatically correct English sentence stop being a requirement for a Journalism degree?

It shouldn't be that hard to contain a fire in a tree stump. Pee and throw dirt on it.
My two younger brothers in their post high school days had a group of friends who called themselves the "Campfire Buddies". They made it a point to "drown" their campfire ashes with beer....after recycling it of course.

How was there a stump on the range?

The article doesn't say, but many people in this are will go up into the mountain recreation areas; Larch Mountain is a popular place: and make impromptu ranges in clear cut areas. Unfortunately, many of these idiots don't take the trouble to make sure they have a safe backstop and just start blazing away. Most of them also don't bother to clean up their brass or targets after they are through.:fire:

Personally, I won't go to any of these places to shoot. It's just not safe.

Amazing! However, the concept of "public lands" fails to register with me over here as I have to pay my own way. To think that you can get something for nothing or use someone else's dime.

Well, tragedy of the commons in action. If it belongs to no one, then no one take responsibility for it.:(

El Tejon, most of these guys are peckerwoods of the first order. The way they act on public property is probably the same way they act on their own property.
