the 70 knots a cigarette boat will do should close the distance pretty quick.
Yeah, but how are you going to shoot 'em? A cigarette boat will burn it up, but you'll slow it down a great deal with armaments, and you'll pretty much have to stop to shoot. 'Course that boat Tim Curry had in McHale's Navy would probably work. Something purpose-built would be best.

This is simple to solve but no one is interested. A small ship, disguised as a pleasure craft or freighter, heavily armed. Suck them in and kill them. Repeat as nessesary.

+1 on that!

I like the PT boat idea.:D Convert to twin diesel. Forget nitrous; it only rolled good on film. Only problem I see is PT boats were built to be used, not mothballed, so who knows how many are left.

Single M2 Browning up front, twin .50 right behind the bridge and aft. Four torpedo tubes. Yup, keep the torpedoes. They may come in handy when we find the mothership I heard something about.:D :D Every crew member has something in .308, .45acp, and/or a shotgun for the close in work/boarders. Don't give up the ship because not only do we not want them to have a frigate for us to deal with, as somebody mentioned, we don't want them taking a PT boat away from us either.:D

I like that "Wild Weasel" model. Do we use two PT's or four?

I wouldn't rule out those other boats the SEALs use either.

Just in case I do someday hit the Mega Millions lottery and decide to sail the world, what can you arm a boat with? I imagine that full auto is frowned upon in most ports, and could result in an extended stay in a less than desireable locale, along with the loss of your boat. Anyone familiar with this area of law?

Since our military has more pressing business elsewhere, perhaps its time for Congress to again issue Letters of Marque in order to deal with the resurgence of piracy.

I was playing Sid Meier's Pirates(the new one) not ten minutes ago and I thought the same thing. Mount a few cannons on a fast ship, some machine guns, then give the pirates the broad-side! The pirates would probably just run away, sadly. So, a trap or a really fast ship.

Sometimes when I can't sleep, I lay awake thinking of things like this and what I would do if I had unlimited funds and nothing but time on my hands- first buy a large old sailing craft- next remodify as necessary to mount and conceal a couple of large old naval cannons- as pirates approach lift the gun hatches and deliver a close up blast of grape shot- of course have as back up a couple of 50's, assorted small arms, and perhaps shoulder held missles just in case- I gotta get some professional help :D

losangeles is quite correct this has been going on for many years in the Pacific Ocean or better still in the South China Sea along with the Indian Ocean. Not much of a crew on many of the big cargo or oil ships that are often taken over & held for ransom money.

Anyone can claim train the crews & supply them with arms, but that is a joke & so shipping people simply pay the ransom money & have done so for many, many yrs.

I'd help.

The problem is figuring out a legal way to do it.
