DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Two U.S. Navy warships exchanged gunfire with suspected pirates Saturday off the coast of Somalia, and one suspect was killed and five others were wounded, the navy said.

Twelve suspects were taken into custody after the early-morning shootout, said Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown, spokesman for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

No sailors were wounded in the battle, which occurred at about 5:40 a.m. local time, approximately 25 nautical miles off the Somali coast in international waters.

The battle started after the USS Cape St. George and USS Gonzalez, which were patrolling as part of a Dutch-led task force, spotted a 30-foot fishing boat towing smaller skiffs and prepared to board and inspect the vessels.

The suspected pirates were holding what appeared to be rocket-propelled grenade launchers, the navy said. When the suspects began shooting, naval gunners returned fire with mounted machine guns.

Three suspects were seriously wounded and being treated on one of the Navy ships, Brown told The Associated Press. A Dutch Navy medical team was en route.

The suspects' nationalities were unknown.

The Navy boarding teams confiscated an RPG launcher and automatic weapons, the statement said.

The Cape St. George, a guided-missile cruiser, and Gonzalez, a guided-missile destroyer, were conducting maritime security operations in the area. They are based in Norfolk, Va.

The International Maritime Organization has warned ships to stay away from the Somali coast because of pirate attacks, which surged to 35 last year from two in 2004.

On March 15, the U.N. Security Council encouraged naval forces operating off Somalia to take action against suspected piracy. Pirate attacks against aid ships have hindered U.N. efforts to provide relief to the victims of a severe drought in the area.

The pirate raids are part of the anarchy wracking Somalia, which has had no effective government since 1991, when warlords ousted a dictatorship and then turned on each other.

Since CNN ran that story about the cruise ship being attacked, every time we go on a cruise there is always some little old lady that asks the captain if we will be attacked by pirates.

Sound to me like a couple of Fletcher class DD's would do better than the Ageias class. 4-5" guns w/8 40mm for back up!!:D

It has been a few years since I did boardings like that, but standard procedure when I was doing it was 4 50cal M2's mounted, 2 on each side of the ship. Bad guys were looking at at LEAST 2 50's opening up on them when they got stupid, possibly 4 50's if the other boat was in position to cover as well. Distance from the boarded vessel was usually about 800-1000 yards.

A couple AK's and an RPG against at least 2 50's locked and loaded, distance of about 1000 yards. BAD idea to start shooting LOL.

The only time we had the 5" guns and CIWS 'ready' doing boardings was in a hot area like the Persian Gulf or if a potentially unfriendly warship or aircraft were in the area.

...the suspects began shooting

Bad idea.

Exactly what I was thinking.

As much sense as....
..... I think I'll go kick that rhino in the @ss.

It reminds me of some footage I saw years back of a tank taking small arms
fire over in the sand box. You hear ping... ping... ping, ping, ping. Then the
tank turns its turret towards this mud hut in the distance..... you can see a
little black blob running like hell from behind it.

I think once they started shooting, they ceased to be "suspects"

"Three suspects were seriously wounded and being treated on one of the Navy ships, Brown told The Associated Press. A Dutch Navy medical team was en route."

Waste of time. Lots of hungry sharks around there.....

hmm. they attacked a cruiser and a destroyer with a fishing boat.
real einsteins in that group
.

Well if you know you're going to be hung anyway, whaddya got to lose?
It also amuses me that theygo to all the trouble of patching these idiots up just so they can execute them later. Like someone already said
sharks gotta eat too...

Ironically enough, I just finished reading a magazine article in one of my back issues of Military Heritage which dealt with the problems the U.S. was faced with when pirating from the Barbary Nations occured. We took a no B.S stance and declared war on them, ultimately leading to a punitive action in which our navy attacked those piratical cities and gained a right for free travel.

The pirates had been told that Americans always run from a fight.

Who knows. Maybe they would have run from a fight. A cruiser and destroyer against a dhow isn't a fight

Oh, and bigchoad, remember Blazing Saddles?
"They said you was hung!"
"And they was right."

I thought that the UAE was our freinds? Didn't CCN and all the talking heads tell us that so the could control our ports? :what:

In this case the UAE is merely where this story was released from.... a story about pirates off the coast of Somalia. It doesn't reflect on the UAE one way or the other.

I don't know about all that. I just thought it was cool that Charlie Brown is now a LCDR in the USN and is the spokesman for the 5th fleet. He's come a long way from the pitcher's mound.

Ohhhh alright, shootin' up a bunch of pirates is cool too...

:D

I aways wonder about the mental state of the bad guys in situations like this. I mean really, all kidding aside, what are a few guys in two 20' wooden boats going to do against naval warships other than get blown out of the water? I even thought that after the cruise ship report. A tiny little boat and a dude with an RPG wouldn't be able to take on a ship that size, even if it wasn't moving at full steam.

If they were broadside to the Navy ships at all...

...how far down can the Phalanx guns aim? To water level? That'd be over quick, if so. I can picture that.

"Pirate vessel one thousand feet to starboard"
*BZZZRRRRP*
"Uh...reddish cloud and sawdust one thousand feet to starboard."
