Man dies from shot to head at shooting range

05:22 AM CDT on Thursday, May 11, 2006

From Staff Reports

Police were investigating the fatal shooting of a man at the DFW Gun Range at 1607 W. Mockingbird Lane on Wednesday evening.

The man, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, fired a few rounds from a handgun into a target before he was found shot in the head, patron Daniel Bega said. Dallas police Sgt. J.W. Almy said the death appeared to be suicidal or accidental since no one was near the man at the time.

This is the same range that had its roof collapse less than a year ago. :uhoh:

Having had two myself over the last six years

I feel very bad for those folks! The insurance company says that 1/30,000 people have that intent walking into a range... I'm glad those numbers are much higher here.

Support that range more than ever-or they are sure to go away.

Our local range

Has had a couple of suicides in the last 5 years or so. People walk in, rent a gun, step out onto the line, and pop themselves. What they have done since to try to curtail that is that in order to rent a firearm from the range, you must have a functioning firearm in your posession. Yeah, that somewhat limits the ability of someone who doesn't own a gun from coming and trying something out before buying it, but since they have had that policy in place, they haven't had a single suicide.

I've also heard of ranges that decline to rent to solo people, based on the theory that suicide is not something one usually does for an audience that will simply stand by.

Support that range more than ever-or they are sure to go away.

There are other ranges 20 miles closer to me that charge the same or are cheaper. I'm sure that I would be more likely to go there, if they were closer.

I have been to that range a few times and the owner also runs it with his staff. Very personable and friendly people. It's a shame that they're going to be the ones to catch h&ll for this by the media.

Guys, there is no indication this is a rental deal. In fact, they don't know yet if it is an accident/negligent or suicide. They have simply ruled out murder since nobody was near. I don't know if that is the same thing as being alone on the range or not, but one of the things about guns is the ability to hit folks you are not necessarily nearby.

Can't rent you a gun unless you have a gun? That is like banks that won't loan you money if you don't have money.

I remember a similar ND death up here years ago, maybe 20 years ago now.

Moron was out shooting. Hang fire in his revolver . . . yes, that's right, he looked down the barrel. Bullet went in through the left eye.

I would guess negligent death before I would guess suicide (why shoot downrange before capping self) or murder (too many potential witnesses at public range).

Man, that sucks. More trouble for a range that has already had enough set backs this year.

IF it was a suicide, all I can say is I wish people would find other means than doing it at a shooting range. This is just another click in the anti gun arena.

I agree,
but most people who commit suicide aren't thinking of anyone but themselves.
One exception would be someone who was terminally ill,or trying to protect someone else from something they had done.
