I've been on an email list for Richard Nagy who is goes by Datamancer for his business. He makes custom "steampunk" stuff, think old looking new stuff like what you see in Dr Who. A while back (a year of so?) he started playing with making a 10 round Mosin Nagant, and he succeeded. You can see his videos on YouTube (I would link them but I'm on a dinosaur computer that is extremely limited) from initial mockup to working prototype. And yes, he does rattle off 10 live rounds trouble free.
What he came up with is not exactly what we would consider a detachable magazine. What it is is an extention of the internal magazine. The separator design on the Mosin would make it difficult to convert it to a true detachable mag. What he came up with is a design for which you remove the original floorplate and spring and attach this 5 round extension to the original latch. It does not require any modifications to the rifle and converts back in seconds, so even you purists could run it. The tough part was developing a spring system that would feed the extra travel.
Well, he has a patent on the design and had intended to produce them but is busy running his custom shop. So he sent out an email to those of us on his list stating that he is looking for someone to produce them for sale. He will provide 3D CAD diagrams, specs, and working prototypes to whoever decides to take it on. Evidently he is just looking for a small percentage for licensing the use of his patent.
Unfortunately this is not what I do and I am busy running my own business (auto repair). My interest in this is simply as a consumer. I want to see this thing come to market so I can buy a couple. Any fabricators out there want to check it out? Could be a nice side project or a fun new business opportunity. PM me an email address and I'll forward his email to you or you can look him up yourself. I've talked to him thru his main business, look up Datamancer. His side project site is Mosinmag.com, but that appears to just be a placeholder. Somebody PLEASE make this a reality!
