Just bought my 2nd M91/30. It's a 1939 Izhevsk.

When I load any number of rounds, and make sure to press the nose of the bullet down somewhat, it stays down in the magazine, and when I try to chamber it it nosedives. I end up having to push the base of the cartridge in the magazine to make the noise point up again.

My other Mosin, a 1943 one (that is quite a bit rougher in appearance) can't really do this to this degree.

Is something wrong with mine? It only does it if I push the nose down.

My first move would be to try to clean and degrease the inside of the magazine well. Make sure it's smooth and clean in there.

Then make sure your spring is in good condition.

I spray painted a Mosin once and got some spray paint inside the mag well. It had similar symptoms.

It seems to me that if you push the nose down it could cause the rim to come up and slip over the round beneath it. That could cause it to rim lock. I'm not an expert on this, I'm just guessing. I push down on the cartridge between the neck and the rim and I've never had a problem.

I think this is what's going on, because the round beneath it also pushes forward. Is this acceptable? It only does it when I push the nose down.

Take it out of the stock and see if it does the same thing. If the interrupter doesn't have enough clearance in the stock, it can cause things like rimlock to happen. The interrupter is pretty ingenious on these but if it binds up at all, bad things happen. Also, when you load, make sure that the cartridges are pushed down as far as possible. This will make sure that the second-to-top case gets under the interrupter.

You can't chamber a round if it's rim locked, so I wouldn't find it acceptable. IMO, it's a matter of user error. Mosin Nagants are quirky by modern Western standards. You have to learn how to use them. Some will say a Mosin Nagant can't rim lock if the interrupter is working correctly, but I've owned a dozen of them and all of them rim lock if I load them with aftermarket stripper clips. They never rim lock if I manually load the magazine.

Hello,

It sounds to me like the stop follower spring is weak or bent.

It could chamber if it rimlocked, but only after overcoming that rimlock, so it's another possibility.

Josh

I was about to tell you to try changing the spring of the internal ammo box but i see it's already been said. I think you merely have a weak spring. You can easily check by swapping the springs of your 2 Mosin Nagants and see if the problem swaps too.

I changed the two magazine springs/followers. I can still get it to jam with the other magazine follower.

Interestingly, I can also get my "older" 1943 Mosin to do the jam, though it's a bit harder to get to happen and it seems a bit easier to clear.
