Hey guys,

So I'm in the market for a good hunting rifle on the cheap. I'm a fan of old military rifles, especially the Russian ones.

I found a good Mosin Nagant, I have a choice of Tula Manufactured, for $100..in excellent shape. Comes with the bayonet and all.

I can get a hex receiver, or a round receiver... the round is $10 cheaper.

I want to mount a scope on it... so which receiver is better?

I don't want to dump a lot of money into the gun to make it ready for the hunt...

So I found this scope mount, It replaces the rear sight... seems pretty simple, will use some loc-tite too.

No need to bend anything, or drill anything.

What do you guys think? I know very little about these rifles, and for $100, plus this mount, even after shipping and FFL transfer, I'll be in around $140. Thats about all I can afford.

I don't think I can find a better medium-long range hunting rifle for the money?

Thanks.

Receiver type doesn't matter, it's purely a collector concern. Realistically, with a little practice, you probably don't even need optics. I've taken all my deer with military rifles and iron sights, no problems.

the mosin nagant is probably the best bolt action rifle under $300. if possible get a hand selected one with the hex receiver, but i have no clue about that scope mount. personally id go with a bent bolt setup from BoltMan. Happy Hunting!

I can get a selected one with a hex receiver, but is the rear sight the same? I really want to take the easy route on mounting a scope.

Here is mine.....

Original cost $89 (picked up from J&G Sales so there was no transfer fee). Tula stamp / round reciever.

Swapped out the orginal stock to synthetic ($50).

Modified (extended) existing bolt.

Installed scope mount ($50).

Scope $65.

Tula stamp / round reciever.

You want to make sure you get a good quality mount. A cheap, aluminum mount won't hold up. The screws will strip out before you can tension them enough to secure the mount. I don't know about that particular mount. Just make sure you do the research. S&K and Accumount are good ones.

No, I don't realize that I need to use a pistol scope with that mount.

I'm thinking that I may just pass this up entirely. Seems to complicated to get a scope on it. By the time I get one on right, its another $75-$100.

don't give up... just use .22 rings or a 3/8 to wever style adapter and use the dove tail that your original rear site is sitting on. much cheaper, and it works fine.

Smart move. After spending all the $$$ to make it into a halfway decent hunting rifle, you will have something that costs nearly as much, and is not nearly as accurate as a commercially made hunting rifle.

Forget throwing money at it trying to turn it into a "sporting" rifle. Just buy you a Mosin and go after your deer with iron sights.

I once had scoping a mosin explained to me like this
it'll be more work than the rifle is worth (doing it yourself...)
it'll be more money than the rifle is worth (either originality PE or PU or repro)
it'll be a rather poor compromise, as in the scout mount.

and lets put it this way, most mount jobs will add nothing to the value of a $70 rifle, and cost you enough to buy a hunting rifle from wally world

some where i heard that exact mount system tends to "fall off" after a few shots, cheap gun+cheaply made parts+ 7.62x54r= bad news

Alright, convinced this is not the right concept to get behind. Not sure if I can ever get close enough to a deer to use the iron sights.

Maybe I'll just use this money to go to a show or something, or get a better scope for my SAIGA.

I think you should go for it with iron sights. Practice a bit, and you should be able to print 8" groups at 100 yards, which should be sufficient, unless you're out in the open. Deer don't like being out in the open if they can help it.

If Mosins are like other recent military guns, they will go up I'm value as the supply dries up. So if it doesn't work out, just plan on holding onto it for 5-10 years.

Example: Makarovs used to go for $100. Maybe 5 years ago. Now, they go for $250.

Go for it. Go deer hunting in STYLE!

I doubt if the supply of Mosins is gonna dry up anytime soon. They've been cheap for nearly 2 decades. I bought one 20+ years ago for the going rate of 50 bucks. The same gun today is about 100 bucks. Not a huge $$ increase...Heck, I'd guess a Happy meal probably costs twice what it did back then....Even if the surplus market dries up, there will still be millions of them out there swapping hands for budget prices.

If it's a 91/30, you don't need to worry about a scope at all. If the deer is within 100 yards, just stab it with the bayonet!

I love my Mosin. It's fun to shoot (once the bolt was cleaned up), but long as hell!

I've scoped two Mosin Nagants with the modern rail (replace the rear sight)... one a 91/30 and the other an M44.

Both kept 1-2" groups at 100 yards with Czech Silver Tip which I was thoroughly impressed by.

However, after about 10 shots, I was off the target because the scope or mount moved. Corrected the movement and got the same results in another 5-10 rounds.

I had tightened everything I tight as they would go and added plenty of Loctite. Nothing will keep it from moving!!! :cuss:

Simple. If you want a scoped Mosin, GET A SNIPER version.

http://classicarms.us/ has them for $399.

Not sure why you fellas are having problems with the scope mounts moving. Mine is dialed in at 1-2" groupings at 100 yards. I've put hundreds of rounds through it with no problem. I personally can't fathom a better hunting rifle investment for $250.............. just my thoughts from the peanut gallery.

I had one of those mounts as well. I took it off after a while. I didn't like it because it wasn't "sturdy" enough and I also couldn't get my scope back far enough (eye relief) for my taste.

Moisn nagant scope

Yuo can put a rifle scope on it the have kits at "accumount"I Put one on my mauser and am getting one for my m-44,It replaces the rear sight and mounts a rail on top to attach the scope to.hope It helps.

91/30 im using the dovetail under the sight and a solid rimfire/airgun mount to hold a simons pro handgun scope. Total cost was around 200 for. The whole thing.

Yeah, but see by the time I get it after shipping and FFL fees, I'm in $150.. add a scope.. and whatever of the many methods of mounting, and I can then have bough a Marlin or Remington of some sort.

I may buy one down the road, just to ..have. But not right now, money is way to tight.. was just wanting a good hunting gun, but this doesn't seem to be the ace of the deck I thought it might be.

I'm not going to try and shoot at a deer with open sights. I just got my hunting permit, and when deer season comes, I have a lot of learning to do.. not feeling confident enough for an open sight kinda thing. Too much else to learn and worry about.. again, down the road..

Thanks guys.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good perspective on things.

I have a hex 91/30 Mosin that I got from AIM Surplus, paid the handpick fee, and it's beautiful. 1926 Izhevsk. Shoots great.

I definitely recommend picking one up when you can, it's really fun to shoot.

Don't waste your money on that scope mount. It is junk. Buy a Darrell scout mount. They are good mounts. Just google Darrell scout mounts to reach the site. I have two and they are great. One thing to consider, if the particular rifle you have does not shoot accurately, a scope is not going to help much. Start with an accurate rifle. Not all Mosin Nagants are created equal....chris3
