Hi everybody i am purchasing a Mosin Nagant from a friend this weekend and i was wondering whats so great about them? I am kind of familiar with the models I think from what he described it is a m44 or m38 carbine i dont believe it to be a cutdown 91/30 but it may be that too.....any useful advice on them such as what brand of ammo to use or any pics of your own would be useful as id like to see what the possibilities of the rifle are.

thanks

midtennpawnstar- Mosin Nagants are beautiful rifles in that they are cheap, durable, and for the most part, reasonably accurate.

Barnaul, and Wolf make alot of steel cased 7.52x54R and have given me decent luck so far, also 440 round "spam cans" can be had for as low as 70 dollars, and depending on country of origin and bullet weight, will give great results.

One thing to keep in mind with surplus ammo is the corrosive primers, the mercuric salts must be neutralized with something like ammonia or Hoppes solvent after every use to avoid corrosion on the working surfaces.

They are all sighted in at the factory with the bayonet on, as it was standard Soviet practice, so you will get good groups, but not POA. The sight posts can be a bit stubborn, but they worked for a wartime so they will work for you. If that is not the case, Mojo sights make a great replacement option, that are no gunsmithing required, and relatively cheap.

There are many Mosin Nagant owners her and arount the internet that will be more than happy to provide model identification assistance, and aid you in breaking in and enjoying your rifle.

^^^ Great site to check out, can tell you much more than I can type here.

They are popular because they are cheap, robust, simple, FUN, rifles with WWII history.

Have fun with the new Boom Stick.

More info than you can think about...

Also, I like the copper-washed Russian ammo in my Finn-marked Model 1891. Doesn't stick like the lacquered cases or Bulgarian brass-cased ammo.

Congrats on the rifle...I have a brother to that one a '45 M44 Izzy, couldnt pass it up a few years, like new condition for 75 OTD. Its one of my favorite rifles and shares the cabinet with some that cost vast amounts more that I dont enjoy as much. tell us how she shoots!

i was wondering whats so great about them?

MN's are:

1)a piece of history
2)cheap
3)able to fire cheap surplus ammo
4)able to leave your shoulder black and blue with a 20th century state of the art metal buttplate
5)loud enough to impress your friends and annoy others
6)able to hit a pie plate at 25yds (maybe)
7)able to give you an arm workout by just opening and closing the bolt
8)long enough to use as stilts if you have two of them

I'm sure there are others :)

THe Mosin had a love and hate affair with American gun owners. First, the Remington factory had a contract to produce them in the early part of 20th century. Then WW 2 happened. It shined during the Stalingrad Campaign and finally the downfall of Berlin .
Now the hate followed which almost stayed to this day. We all know during the Korean War the CHicom and N Korean forces used them in large numbers to fight American and UN troops . Followed in the 1960s as VC forces were armed with M 44s in jungle warfare. So its understandable the history of the Mosin was long and hard. A great many Americans love em or hate em .

Awesome!

I just got done shooting about 50 rounds through it and it was awesome!:)

Recoil wasnt very bad i had a semi thick sweater on but man it was loud it really muffled the sounds of me friends 270 lol

I enjoyed it and will probably take it out again tomorrow for a little fine tuning on my accuracy because with the bayonet closed and open it was off at various distances, however i nailed a 20 inch wide by 20 inch tall sheet of cardboard at about 250 yards on the second shot with it open so i mean for me it seemed pretty good for the first day out shooting outher than that i was just shooting at trees and cinder blocks about 100 yards out....all in all it was a blast...and a little bruising :)

Unlikely. Remember, most of the Mosins used against US personnel were used in Korea and Vietnam. The rifles shipped to those countries remained in those countries. The rifles that have been imported to the US are almost all coming from older stocks. After WWII, Russia's experience with their lack of arms at the outset of the Great Patriotic War meant that they immeidately took almost all of the millions of Mosin's, refurbed them, and put them into storage. Unless your Mosin is a GI bringback from a warzone, the chances against it ever killing a US citizen or soldier is effectively zero. If it IS a GI bringback, the chance it killed an American is just very unlikely.

However ... GI's in Afghanistan are being shot at with Mosin's to this day ....

People buy them because they're cheap, but keep them because they're the best ;) One of my favorite rifles.

Yay! Another chance to post the one I just bought from a local guy for $75.00!
