Mossberg 500 question.

When you're 100, you can give it to your son. And your son can give it to your grandson when he's 100. In that time parts will break. Machines are like that.

Thanks guys! I think I will be getting one of those very soon! I like the one with the raised portion as the original piece can be hard to grip sometimes.

I have what I thought was a Mossy 500. Came with a pistol grip and the barrel with the breaching attachment on the barrel. Well, I got tired of that and ordered a plain 18 1/2" cylinder barrel from Cabelas and found that I have a 500A and it doesn't fit. Learned something new today. Now Mossburg says a 500A is a 12 GA, a 500B is 16 GA etc. But the magazine attachment is different. Mine has a ring on the barrel that slides over the tube and a cap that threads on. The new barrel has a captive screw that threads into something on the magazine tube.

Almost all 500s have the captive screw barrel and AFAIK all 590s have the end cap barrel. However on some 500 models Mossberg cheats and uses the 590 style magazine and barrel. The barrel with the breacher choke is a 590 style, regardless of what the receiver says.

Either get a 590 style barrel or change the magazine tube to a 500 style to take 500 barrels.

Is that breacher a screw in choke? You could replace that with a flush fit choke and have basically the same thing.

Pretty sure the 835 barrels use the same mounting system---just don't try to use any 3.5in shells in that receiver.

It appears to be permanently afixed. It was bought with a pistol grip which I switched for a shoulder stock shortly after purchase. I have used it for some local 3 gun events and needed a gun in a hurry otherwise I'd not have bought it. I tell folks the thing on the end us for planting Tulip bulbs!

If I order a 590 style barrel do I have to be concerned about the receiver end fitting, or will it be the same?

Maybe I should see if my Sheriff's department wants it and buy a Benelli.

Mossberg does make the 500 with the same barrel and mag cap setup as the 590. However it appears they only come in the tactical version with the 18.5" barrel and pistol grip. I don't know if a replacement 590 barrel would fit but my guess is it would. So long as it's not a heavy walled barrel from the 590a1. I believe AIMPRO Tactical converts 500's from the standard 500 setup to the 590 style setup. So it would make since that you have a 500 marked as a 500 but with a barrel and mag tube setup as the 590. Hope this helps

I bought the Mossburg over the Remington because of the shell lifter. On the Remington the lifter blocks the magazine tube when the action is closed. On the Mossburg it does not. It seemed to me that not having to get the lifter out of the way when attempting to load more shells might be an advantage.

I guess I'll look for a 590 barrel someplace with a good return policy.

If it kicks like my 500 slug gun, the question is how long can you last! Lol
Mine is brutal!

Mossbergs beat me up until I shim 'em for more stock drop. The stock is too shallow out of the box. Proper FIT really helps reduce felt recoil. Mossberg makes a shim kit for the purpose, but I just used pop bottle plastic and cut to fit 3 or 4 until I got it where I wanted it. Now it's nice. :D

I had an OLD Revelation 310 I traded for, bought a 500 barrel for it for the new steel shot laws in 1980. I bought a new 500 camo in 1992 and sold the old Revelation which is still going for the guy I sold it to. My 500 has never missed a beat through many duck seasons in the salt marsh despite less than nice treatment at times. That gun has never seen anything, but high brass 2 3/4 and 3" steel or hevishot. It's been my go to duck and goose gun.

I bought a model 535 with 3.5" chamber a couple of years ago at a pawn shop. I shimmed the stock on it, too, but I cannot imagine firing 21 rounds of 3.5" T shot out of it like I have my 10 gauge H&R. Talk about BRUTAL! I mean, one shot's okay on the pattern board, but the 10 gauge outweighs that Mossy by a couple of pounds and that really helps. The 10 shoots better patterns, so I figure I'll keep using the 10 on geese and maybe use the 535 some on ducks with 2 3/4" shells. I really didn't need it, but I like Mossbergs, rugged and the ergos are FAR superior to anything else except a Browning BPS. I shoot left handed and love the tang safety and really appreciate the shell elevator design on the Mossy and Brownings, out of the way for reloading fast without hassle. Been there, done that with 870s, no thanks. You can have 'em. And, mine was a Wingmaster, not a crappy express.
