Do any of your M590's have a model number stamped anywhere on it?
My 590 Marinecote (not an A1) has the model number stamped on the bottom of the receiver between the loading port and the mag tube.

Great gun. No problems.

Well I am BUMMED out!

Local dealer can't get a 590A1!!!!! :cuss:

He gave me some B.S. story about them being discontinued. I think not.
He just can't get one.

Anyone seen one for sale NIB anywhere?

Mossberg doesnt offer screw-in chokes for this model (or any other "short" gun), so you're limited in what you can shoot and actually get good patterns out of.

I haven't pursued it, but when I had my 590 with a gunsmith he said he could thread the end of the barrel for chokes for $25, so if you're interested in chokes you might want to ask a local gunsmith about it.

Trifler, I asked my usual guy, and he doesnt have the tools to do it and hasnt done it before. He said I was the first person to ask about it, and he's been there a while. Got a number for another one that I havent called, at the moment my projects and ambitions exceed my budget.

I've done some pricing online, and you would not believe some of the prices I see. $25 is the best I've seen.

Dawg,

Nice 590 - is that an A1 or do the ghost rings preclude a heat shield?

I kind of wish I had gotten the A1 but for those of you who have Dick's sporting goods they often have sales on the 590 (keep checking) for $319.99 with bead sight.

Do you keep a different load in those sling-loops? Do you find it tough to use the sling for sling-type stuff with the shells hanging off?

I've thought about using one of those but then realize I will have blasted apart my house, lost my hearing and vision, and be on my way to jail if I've expended 9 12ga rounds of buck shooting at an intruder.

Alexd,

To install a heat-shield, you have to slip it in from the front of the barrel. If you have the GRS, you can't install the heat-shield because you can't slip the shield onto it.

The HS will fit witht he GRS, youjuat have to spread the tabs up enough to fit over top of the bbl. Using a longer screw makes it easier to close them back up, and after you get one of the short screws in, you can swap the long one back out.

I havent tried it on the A1's HBAR, I dont have an A1. It seems like I spoke to someone who did and they said it wouldnt fit because of the larger OD of the bbl.

I find it unlikely, a gun shop here has just started selling them, and we're like 5000 miles away or something!

I cant see the point personally, I would have thought a 500A more useful, but each to his own.

I've decided to go with the M590A1.
The Mossberg website has it listed as model number 51663.
I'll have to special order it from the local dealer.

Sir, the 51663 is the "Heavy Walled Barrel" model, the only model that I know of that has the heavy walled barrel. The 50663 is identical....lacks speedloader stock, no pistol grip, no heat shield, HAS ghostrings, HAS 9 shot capacity....or so the mossberg website would have me believe.

See if your guy can get that one

... do the ghost rings preclude a heat shield?

I can speak from experience on this one, since I did it. The 590A1 has a larger outer diameter barrel, so the heat shield won't fit on it. Contrary to what Mossberg says, it is possible to do it with a 590. I endeavored to do it with mine. The main thing is the bead sight is in the way. I took mine to a gunsmith to remove the bead sight and install the ghost-rings after putting on the heat shield. The heat shield went on easily after the bead sight was removed.

The one hiccup I had was that since I have the Marinecote(tm) on my 590, he wasn't able to install the front ghost-ring sight because Mossberg told him they no longer produce the Marinecote coating (Installing the front ghost-ring sight involves some welding), so they couldn't re-coat the barrel. I had him check for any place that would do any color of this type of coating and he said he wasn't able to find anyone. He said Remington, for one, told him they only coat their own guns. So in the end (this all took a long time) I ended up just having him put a fiber-optic front sight on and using the rear ghost-ring sight. I would imagine that on a black 590 without the Marinecote this probably wouldn't be as much of an issue.

This is a picture of a 590A1 with GRS and a heat shield. It is not my shotgun. It shows it is possible to install a heat shield on a 590A1 with GRS. The owner of this shotgun is a member of Shotgun World and he explained how he did it. I forgot how but I do remember it was not difficult.

Hmm. Are you certain that's a Mossberg heat shield? It could be an aftermarket one. In any case, I can think of three possibilities off-hand:

1) It could be an aftermarket heat shield.
2) He could be using a 590 barrel on an otherwise 590A1 shotgun.
3) He could have used some machine to bend the hell out of a Mossberg heat shield to get it to go on (no easy task).

It is a 590A1 with the heavy barrel. You can see that it has a heavy barrel in the picture. It is a modified Mossberg heat shield.

Here is how a heat shield is installed on a 590A1:

There isn't any problem with getting the shield over the barrel. You will have to remove the barrel to install it though. Once the barrel is off, you will have to start the shield on by slipping the rear ring of the shield over the barrel just after the front sight and sliding it rearward, then slipping the front cross screw ears over the barrel just after the front sight. You will need to relieve some of the metal inside the shield on the underside of the front band that contacts the top of the barrel. You will also have to slightly open up the cross screw holes, and get longer cross screws. There is a lot of trial and error in fitting the thing, and just make sure you don't take too much metal off.

I found one myself on-line and got my dealer to fax his FFL to the seller.
Should have it in a couple of weeks.

I have a 590 Special Purpose that came with the GRS.

Mossberg says you can't put a heat shield on it with the factory ghost rings since the front sight is not removable, so I took it as a personal challenge.

I bought a genuine Mossberg heat shield and went to work.

First, I found the thinnest (outside diameter) part of the barrel where I could force the front heat shield brackets over.
I taped up that part of the barrel with electrical tape so it wouldn't get scratched when I forced the heat shield brackets over it.

Next, I spread the brackets on the front of the heat shield just far enough to get them over the barrel. You have to be very careful not to spread them too far or you will kink the metal of the heat shield by the bracket.

Next, I slid the rear part of the heat shield on to the the back of the barrel and slid it down to where I put the electrical tape. Then I carefully pushed the front heat shield brackets over the barrel.

Last, I had to bend the front brackets back together close enough so the mounting screws would reach the nuts. This was the biggest pain in the ass!!
I ended up using small "C" clamps (with electrical tape on the ends to keep from scratching the heat shield brackets) to compress the brackets close enough together to get the screws through to reach the nuts. After that I tightend the screws and was good to go.

Looking back, it really wasn't that difficult to do. You just have to take your time and not get frustrated.

I have the 590A1 with 18.5"bbl, mine was a special federal order that never came to be, so they were offered through LE sales. The main special thing about it is that she has factory screw-in chokes, and is so marked on the bbl as "AccuchokeII".

I haven't seen the 590A1 18.5" models with choke tubes. In my opinion a shotgun with choke tubes is a good thing and always welcome . You just need a +2 tube extension to go on it.

Ghost Ring Sight?

How hard is it to put a ghost ring on it?

Love my 590 with handguard and brass bead front.

Shot a 500 with the fiber optic enhanced ghost ring (or whatever it was called) and loved that!

Two glowing green dots on either side of the ring and an orange dot at the muzzle.

Here are my Mossbergs. The one on the left is an 835 "Ulti-Mag" with an 18.5" barrel, 3-1/2" chamber and a mag extension. With the extension, the 835 will handle (7+1) 2-3/4" or (6+1) 3" shells or (5+1) 3-1/2" shells. The extension is made by "Craig" at the "Gun Connection" (AKA: MAX100 on the board). The one on the right is a 590A1 (Model 51660-0 with a bead front sight) which I just picked up a couple of days ago....

SoCalShooter,

Yeah, they make a nice pair if I say so myself! The 590A1 was used and I got it off of a member on another board (Shotgunworld) for $350.00......

My "dealer" was talking out his dumb arse. :fire:

It took me EXACTLY 3 minutes on-line and a phone call to locate a 590A1HB. :D

Funds have been sent.

Now I wait. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
