My LGS is having their Grand Reopening sale at the end of the month, and one of the sales is the Mossberg MMR hunter AR rifle. The stock photo they're using is one of the Mossy Oak finishes. Anyway, sale price is $599, for the optics ready, 20" barrel looks like it's free floated but can't tell and the Mossberg website isn't very informative.

While I'm not interested in another AR at the moment, a coworker just drooled all over my laptop when he saw it.

Anyway, how are Mossberg ARs? I figured $599 is a decent price for just about any non-polymer AR style rifle and the MSRP on Mossbergs website is a shade over $1100 for the camo versions.

I'm of the assumption that an AR from any reputable manufacturer should be a solid rifle.

Looking at what I (also assume) believe to be it's closest competitor, the Remington R-15 (predator version), MSRP is about equal with Remington being slightly higher.

Looking for any first hand experience that I can share, and help steer him in the right direction for his first AR. He's not new to guns, as he already has a Remington 770, Mossberg 500, VZ-2008 and a S&W SD9VE.

They aren't bad rifles. If the longer barrel and fixed stock are what he wants and he likes the camo finish then go for it. I don't think there are any others in that price range with a camo option. If he just wants the basic M4 style then go with a S&W, PSA, etc, basic black rifle.

He's apparently not interested in an M-4gery carbine. He has that role filled with the VZ-2008. The Camo is what sold him on the rifle.

If it has the features he wants, they are a great gun. You have to remember Mossberg has been building AR parts for a long time before they put their own name on them.

Any particular reason why? Brand bias?

I have no brand loyalty. Difference in parts specs, quality, etc. Google or look up the differences here, its been discussed to death.

However, for hunting or targets, it will do fine. If he's sold on it for the paint job, by all means go get it. Its basically on par with DelTon or DPMS.
