Mossberg MVP Patrol

Does anyone here have any experience with the above rifle in .308? Or any Mossberg rifles in general. According to the article in the April 2014 issue of Shooting Illustrated This rifle is the closest thing to a factory Scout rifle available.

well that's pretty much just them trying to sell magazines considering that the Ruger gunsite is a true scout rifle and it's been around a heckuva lot longer than the 308 version of the MVP. I have yet to hold the 308 but with the 223s that I've held, the concept sounds really great, a bolt action that takes AR15 mags, but the wood did not feel like the highest quality and the bolts rattled inside the receivers. I have never heard a single poor review on MVPs but I would never chance my money on one myself unless the 308s really stepped up their game in the fit/finish department.

MVP & Ruger scout

I have a Mossberg MVP in 5.56 and a Ruger scout in .308.

Both are a hoot to shoot,but the MVP is CHEAPER to feed and MUCH lighter in recoil [ obviously ].

I shoot the MVP more accurately than the Ruger,but the Ruger has a 2 X LIR and not a conventional scope.

That being said,the Scout shoots minute of deer/boar at 200 yards,NOT MOA.

The Ruger was more than twice the price of the MVP also.

I have the atr and MVP both in .308. they are great rifles. the bolts have a little more wiggle the Savages but that does not both the speed much. They both come with Iron sights which is a strong selling point for me. I planning on buying another atr soon

The Ruger was more than twice the price of the MVP also.

The Rugers sell for around $800 and the MVPs sell for around $550.

ok,but

I paid approx. 1 K for the Ruger with a LIR scope.

The MVP cost me about half that with scope.

I like them both,but wish I had waited for the MVP in .308 as I doubt I will see a difference between the 2,other than price.

Have the MVP/Scope .308 package here, but it hasn't rotated around for its day in the sun yet. That starts tomorrow with chronographing, and it's scheduled for the range next week if the weather holds.
Overall, I like the compact dimensions, they could have chosen a better scope.
I expect a marked reduction in velocities with that short barrel.

Good trigger pull, slightly rough bolt, very solid feel to the gun, unlike many plastic-stockers. I do like backup irons, these are not bad.

Chronographing today:

150 grain load 2600+ FPS.
!68 grain load 2500+ FPS.
175 grain load 2400 + FPS.

Bolt a shade rough in feeding, smoothing up a bit in dry-cycling.

A generally favorable review of the Mossberg MVP Patrol rifle, chambered in 5.56, was recently published in the July issue of Guns & Ammo magazine. However, it was noted the MVP was very "particular" as to which brand of AR-15 magazines (six different brands were tested) it accepted. All brands worked but some were difficult to insert.
It was also noted that the 1:9 twist in the barrel of the MVP was not very "forgiving" in terms of how heavy (long) a bullet it would shoot accurately. Anything heavier than 60 grains proved to be erratic regarding group sizes.
This information is from the current issue of G&A and should still be on the news stands.

I have the Mossberg MVP Patrol 7.62 and its currently serving as a prototype for Boyd's GunStocks as a pattern action. It prints patterns with cheapie steel cased ammo and it cloverleafs with PPU match.

I'm considering getting one but can't decide between the 5.56 or 7.62. I,m hoping and don't know why they don't offer it in 7,62x39. With good ammo or handloads it's a accurate round and offers a great compromise between thos rounds. Yeah I see the .300BO is offered but thats very specilized. You won't find that in most stores. The short Russian would be a huge seller.

Agreed. Mossberg releases a MVP "Russian" that uses AK mags and I can smell the cashflow from here.

I have about 400 rounds through mine and it has been great. Reliable and accurate. I am taking it on a prairie dog shoot at the end of the month and plan to really heat it up. We will see how it performs then. 5.56 is cheap to load and easy on the shoulder. I really like mine.

I did a review when I first purchased it last fall.
