Dick's has these on sale this week, I'm thinking about picking one up, pretty tough to beat that price. It looks like a pretty good little 22.:D

Bought one of those POS from WalMart earlier this year. Got it to the range, wouldn't fire more than two rounds in a row, regardless of magazine change. Ugh.

Please don't - I made the mistake of buying one. :( Very unreliable, it finally broke.

Find a good used .22.

The Remington 597 scoped combo is only $149, with $10 off of that with the coupon, is that a much better choice?:D

Even though I have no experience with Mossbergs, the Plinkster seems like a cheap toy. I DO have experience with the 597's (I have two of them) and they are excellent rifles that can be extremely accurate. Usually, they are more accurate out of the box than 10/22's, and with the right mods and aftermarket parts (just a VQ hammer ought to do it) you can really get them shooting extremely well.

I had one, traded it off. Okay as a plinker, the magazine lips were so sharp they cut me up some. Mine fired every time I pulled the trigger and had no loading problems.

Sad comments. I have an old Mossberg Palomino 400. Accurate and reliable little 22 levergun. I wish they would bring it back.

My wife's plinkster has been perfect right from the box, and the 4 extra mags I bought for it have been also. She likes the light weight, and with a BSA Sweet 22 scope, it's an accurate, fun to shoot rifle.

It has good quailities; straight american type stock, schnabel fore-end, fully adjustable rear site. comes up fast and flat , right at your eye. copy of the mod 60 as far as the action goes. i'd give it a try for 90 bucks. mostly they are good, even if it has a few misfires, go over to rimfirecentral, and fix it yourself , for free!!!

Go for the remington 597. A friend of mine had one and it was easily more accurate than my 10/22 and I seem to be the better shot between us!

However, lose the scope (cheap 4x20 I'm assuming) and get something better or stick with iron sights.

They even have high-caps for the 597 now.

Just don't hold your breath waiting for the rebate...mine sent in august...called them in sept....called them in october (oh it must have gotten lost we'll send you another one) called them in november....called remington and chewed out everyone I could get on a phone or voicemail...still waiting. I guarantee you it's cost me more than $20 of my time (mod 5 $20 rebate) it's really just the principal at this point...I won't be buying anything else new from remington. (already have my 870 the way I like it) I'd buy a CZ if I did it all over again....or one of the Charles daly 99's (same rifle as the rem mod 5) I saw a week later in SGN for $149 + shipping (I work at an FFL so no fees there) Remington is on my "crap"head list....uhh yeah...that's what I call that list ;)

also the 597 is a major PITA to clean/fully dissassemble vs. the ruger...though the standard stock does feel much better to me (more adult sized)

I actually bought both the Remington 597 and the Mossberg 708 on the same day form my locals Cabela's.

I've been to the range with both several times. The Remington has worked great every time. The Mossberg came with a bad clip, however. Once I bought a new one it has worked perfectly. Pretty accurate too.

I have a junkster. I goes bang every time you pull the trigger but from a rest it won't shoot in the same place twice. Put a scope on it and spent several frustrating hours trying to sight it in. Finally threw it in the closet and gave up.

Get a ruger 10/22 or the remington 597.

FWIW, I was at a gun show this weekend and saw several used but decent looking Marlin Model 60s for under $100 each.

Brand new Marln 795 is close in price, dimensions and layout, and it's American-made, with readily available parts, etc.

Brand new Marlin 60 is available for a few bucks more, and it's a world-class rifle, reliable and accurate, with a laminate wood stock standard.

I had one for three days. My neighbor gave it to me as a thank-you for helping him move. I never actually shot it, but it had problems with extraction and would often leave rounds in the chamber when hand-cycling them through so I traded it in towards an SKS.

The overall feel was very poor. It felt like a cheap plastic toy. I would much rather spend the extra $20 and get a US-made Marlin, or wait until the next gun show, where you can no doubt find a plethora of used .22s of much better quality for around $100.

Hell, I bought a brand new Marlin 60 for $120 at a retail hunting & fishing store. They're selling for that right now, again.

You don't even need to get a used gun.

I bought one during the Dick's Black Friday $79 sale along with many other folks. Bought enough ammo to bring the entire purchase over $99 and I received a $20 gift certificate too. I've heard mostly good things about the Plinkster's performance for the price. Mine handled its first 120 rounds pretty good, though it did jam twice with Federal Bulk, but not CCI Blazers. My friend's handles the Federal Bulk fine, so every gun is unique.
Some kids & ladies just might like a light weight gun, especially before adding a scope. The barrel is partly free floated 4 - 5 inches up the stock, and it shoots fairly accurately and is fast handling. It's made in Brazil and it's an extra gun for the the kids or guests when one is needed at the range. Look at the Remington Nylon 66's or the Remington Viper. People still like their plastic guns many years later.
Folks could spend more money and still end up with a model that performs worse.
If only we had all been so lucky to have received one as such an affordable gift when we were kids! :D

Brought one yesterday fired it today 100 plus rounds no problems shot quite tight groups and required just a little adjustment on the windage. Light and fun to shoot. For the price I am happy!

I won a remington 597 in a raffle and I haven't had the best of luck with it. The magazine usually won't feed more than 7 rounds at a time (10 round magazine) and it won't feed remington ammunition. CCI works fairly well if the magazine is only loaded with five rounds.

I will say, the sights and heavy barrel are nice for a rifle in it's price range. I may have to look around and find a decent aftermarket magazine or two.

I prefer my lever action henry. It is more my idea of what a .22 should be.

You know, I looked at the Remington 597 that Dicks is selling. The problem? It doesn't have iron sights to fall back on. Since I want this as a practice rifle, why would I buy something without irons?
