Gents:

I'm seeking opinions as to what you think is the most accurate .308 bolt action, out-of-the box (with no tinkering), for under $1,000. I know that there are may quality bolt-guns for under $1,000, so this may be too broad a consideration. So the cheaper the better.

Thanks!!!

I'd put my money on a Tikka if I wanted best accuracy out of the box with no tinkering under $1,000

There are a lot of folks reporting VERY good accuracy from the Ruger American. I had a standard rifle that was very good, but not quite as good as the Tikka's I've fooled with. I sold my standard American and bought one of the Predators with a heavier 18" barrel. It is a tack driver and as good as the Tikka, but at extreme ranges the velocity loss from the shorter barrel could be a handicap.

Hard to beat a Savage, but any of 'em will give good accuracy with the ammo the rifle likes. There really is no 'best'.

I like Tikka (Sako $$$) rifles a lot -extremely accurate and smooth action, as well as really good stock triggers. Savage would be my second choice.

Savage 10 precision carbine... 1/2 moa with handloads and the shooter doing their part...

Would you like my highly biased opinion? Rem 700, just like mine. Lots of different ones available these days.

I would go with the Savage FCP-LE in the HS precision stock but technically I think its like $1005. If you absolutely have to have it under $1000 you could go with the new FCP-SR. It has a fluted, threaded barrel and over-sized bolt handle for $625 but I think the stock it comes with is junk. Every Savage short action I have owned has been more accurate out of the box then every Remington 700 i've owned. The perk of the Remington is the aftermarket is excellent for it, but its much harder to do a barrel change on one than the Savage and the savage comes with more out of the box IMO. Both are fun to shoot though.

The ruger precision rifle in 308 might also be a great choice if you can find one. They are supposed to be $900ish retail and shoot sub MOA.

When properly built all of the big name companies precision/varmint/target products will shoot better than the owner.

Just Google some reviews of the Savage 10P series, the Remington 700P, the Winchester 70, the Tikka T3, or the Ruger M77 heavy barrel, and you will find multiple reports of 1/2 minute guns out of the box.

Some companies cough*Remington*cough have had QC issues through the last few years but every Remington Ive ever had has been a tack driver.

Tikka or Ruger American

My sentiment as an owner of a .308 Tikka T3 Lite SS, is basically the rifles available now are so much better than 20 years ago you will do well with just about ANY .308 bolt action. :D I list my top three:
#1 Tikka
#2 Ruger
#3 Savage
Not a Remington fanboy... seen too many returns on the 770, plus the recent recall due to trigger issue. YMMV

Get a Remington 700 Milspec. Its about 1K.

The other point to make is that any quality bolt gun at or about 1K is going to be very accurate. If I wasn't born in Ilion, I might just think a Savage, Winchester, Tikka, Mossberg, Browning, or other bolt gun would be worthy of consideration. But I don't.

Savage LE, Remington 5R or police would fit the bill for sure based on first hand experience. I'm sure there are other brands but the pedigree of those are pretty well known. Common to all 3 of those is the HS precision stock.

I really like the looks of the Savage 11 Scout. 18 inch with peep sight. My only concern is that many of the recommended models come with a detachable magazine. Most seem to hold upwards of 10 rounds. I'm not a real fan of 10 rounder boxes on a bolt gun.

Archangel14, I am not a fan of the 10 round single stack for the bolt rifle. It sticks out too far. I added a KRG Xray to my 700 Milspec and I purchased a couple five rounders to go with it.

I am not sure the Savage takes a standard mag.

I have a Savage 10 fcp-k .308 that will shoot half inch groups all day long. It was $605. You can also get an aftermarket 9 round clip for $90. I love that rifle although it is a tad on the heavy side.

That, and I think it unnecessarily seeps into the realm of the tactical. I'm looking for a slim, unencumbered bolt action. I like the Savage 11 Scout, for the iron sights and that nifty cheek piece. But that magazine!!:barf: How about the Savage Hog Hunter? 20 inches, threaded barrel, "Accutrigger", and evidently you can shoot hogs with it!

Just had the opportunity to shoot a Tikka T3 (.308). I'm sure some other new rifles can match it, but to exceed that accuracy would be hard under a grand.

I'll be another to throw in for Tikka. I have a T3 Tactical that is amazing! Better than my Savage 10 PC, but not by much. The difference in the bolt is night and day however, the Tikka is smooth as silk. I cant say its a 1/2 MOA gun because I'm not a 1/2 MOA shooter and dont know. I can say I've shot a few 1/4 inch groups at 100 yards and I can hit 6 inch steel plates at 500.

If the price point was $500 it would be a Savage all day, every day, and twice on Sunday.

At $1000 that's not much that wouldn't be good. I would find something with a 1:10 twist that feels good when shouldered and has the features I want.
