Most overated Handgun?

Smith's 500 & 460 revolvers, Rugers Alaskans and any other company's super revolvers. They are a solution to a non existent problem.

Desert Eagles: Big and badass but only five rounds and way too heavy.

New Colts: Overpriced because of the name.

Glocks: I had a Glock 22 and it was a very realible pistol. But these guns are way overhyped by popular media and the shooting magazines. wunderpistolen:rolleyes:

I'd have to say Glocks. They're good and reliable pistols, but so are many other guns that function just as well, if not better (and sometimes cost less). I think the fact that Glock is good at marketing toward police departments makes civilians think it must be the best b/c so many cops carry them. That's where I think Glock's success has come from--marketing.

I have nothing against the Glocks themselves, just the hype surrounding them. As I said, they're good and reliable pistols. However, I guess I fail to see how Glocks are superior to other guns (CZ, H&K, Sig, XD, Ruger, etc.). On par with, maybe, but superior? I don't think so.

H&K, for example, can make claims toward its superiority given its innovations in techology over the years (polymer pistols, polygonal bores, recoil reduction systems, etc.). The MP5 has probably been the best and most widely used SMG for a long time with its departure from straight blowback SMG designs leading to increased control and accuracy of follow-up shots. They can make claims toward superiority, IMO, b/c they can back it up with innovations that have led the way in firearms. Glock, IMO, has just not done that. Their polymer, polygonal bore pistols are just using the technology that H&K was instrumental in creating.

And yet, Glock offers those options for a fraction of the cost of other brands.

I think Glocks are great, but they're just as over-hyped as the various breeds of 1911s. Think about it, whenever someone posts a threat along the lines of "Which .45 ACP should I get?", I promise you that over half of the replies are pro-1911. Plus, once these people say "buy a 1911!" they go off into all the accessaries you need for it. Trigger jobs, slicking up the action, new hammer, slide work, ect.

I think the 1911 is a great weapon, but it is not by any stretch of the imagination the best .45 on the market. Sigs, Glocks, HKs, they have all shown themselves as being on par with 1911s, if not better.

My point is this. If you want to say that glocks are over-hyped, then in that same post you had better allude to the 1911 line of pistols. They are ultimately the most over-hyped pieces of shooting irons known to man.

Most overrated handgun

Kimber 1911. Since they started making those fancy setups for LAPD SWAT and other elite units, the price has gotten outrageous.

I'm going to give the most honest answer I can. Every single gun I don't like is overrated. :) Even if I havn't fired it, if I don't like it well then it's overrated.

The super revolvers, "a solution to a non-existent problem".

Come on man, give me a break.

They are built for entertainment. And if you haven't figured it out yet, about 99.9% of every round fired down range is for entertainment of the user.

I don't think of shooting as entertaining, so much as relaxing.

I don't find spending $1+ a bullet, having sore wrists, bad hearing, and quickly losing friends at the range "entertaining".

The most overrated handgun(s) in my opinion? Most modern plastic automatics, the worst offenders being (most variants, but not all) Springfield XD, H&K USP, and Glock pistols. Most of these guns have a high capacity, but are just too fat for me. Most shooters must have large hands--only a few of us on this board care much about gun girth.

When I was a new shooter, I was interested in the most modern guns (Steyr M series, HK P2000, Sig Pro, etc), but as I shot more and more of them, the thinner all-metal classics (Hi-Power, 1911, Colt D-frame, Smith K-frame) quickly became my favorites as I started to despise the excess size and clumsy inelegance of the newer guns. Clearly, I'm biased.

Glocks have kept a chunkiness that makes them unsuitable for CCW for a lot of people, yes.

Why I went with the new Taurus MilPro. It's a 45 that's far narrower than a Glock of lesser caliber, and the slide is stainless steel, at that.

glock

never owned one, but I keep getting catalogs of upgrades for them.. If they are so good why all the add ons , triggers, springs, screws, etc. I also think they are ugly looking. My good friend is a sheriff deputy and they have to carry glocks.

There are so many "upgrades" because they are very popular pistols and easy to add crap too. And the vast majority of those upgrades are just that, crap.

If you want to keep a Glock reliable, keep it stock.

The 1911 (which I happen to think is THE most overrated handgun design) also has a bunch of upgrades and add-on-doodads available for it.

The 1911 by far. I've seen this pistol adopted by SWAT teams, only not to train enough on them. The result is a transition to thier sidearm and alot of fumbling around before getting them into action. Sometimes they seem to be adopted for the "cool factor".

My second nomination is the Glock. Its been well over twenty years since the G17 (still one of thier most dependable models) came out, and they have made very few improvements to the design since. They basically just come out with different calibers in the same gun over and over again. And lets face it, the reason its so popular with LE is because the Chiefs can get into new guns on the cheap.

Pretty much any of the "in" guns right now. Glock/Sig/HK, 1911's, Colt SAA's, the really big magnum revolvers. I think the XD's are getting there. Not saying any of them aren't good guns. I just don't get light-headed and weak in the knees when I see them in the store, and no, it's not sour grapes- I can afford most of the pistols I think are overrated/overhyped. I just don't see the hysteria surrounding most of what's popular these days.

Glock. For more reasons than I care to say. No sense starting a flame war. Let's just call it "marketing practices" and be done with it.

Wow

After reading this thread, it seems the only guns which are not overhyped, overpriced and over produced are the cheap RG .22 revolvers from Germany.

It is time for a reality check. Every gun is overhyped....Get over it.... Every gun is overpriced if you dont have the cash....Get over it..... Kimbers are nice guns, if you want one, get it....Then Get over it..... Glocks are nice guns, if you want one, get it... Then Get Over it.... 1911s by any maker are good guns, if they are what you want....Get Over it.

If you don't like Brand X gun, then dont buy it. If you don't like the grip angle on the Glock, don't buy it. If you think that the only decent 1911 ever made was the Remington Rand baby rattle, then just buy that. If you think Kimber is overpriced, so what... It is supply and demand. If glock feels that their mod 17 pistol is perfect just the way it is, they don't have to change it. If it sells, then guess what! it sells!.

Now remember, Every gun is overhyped. Every gun is too expensive. Everyone has their particular flavor of handgun.

There now, we know everyone has an opinion and none are right, so let's drop this silly thread and start a new one; Which GLOCK/1911/CZ/Insert major brand here is the best gun in the world?

Im willing to bet we wouldn't come to any conclusions there either.

PS and as everyone knows, the HK P7 is the best handgun in the world. There, it's settled.
