What are the most overrated guns? I have heard that H&Ks are overrated, as well as the expensive 1911 models

Any 1911. There are far better .45 guns on the market today..than
the antiquated 1911. Guns that are both lighter and more accurate
that work 100% right out of the box, break less often and most even
point better.

The legacy of the 1911 rest soley on the .45 ACP cartridge, not
the 1911 design, which JMB improved on with his masterpiece- the
P-35. Should the P-35 been designed in .45 caliber, you would have
seen the demise of the 1911 long ago.

However, there are folks that will pay a thousand dollars for a $400
gun, and then pay even more money to get it running right.

You can see these guns on the covers of magazines, and posts
about 'old slabsides' on most any forum.

CZF is right. I hate to stir up any ill feelings, but no matter how much heritage, history, great 'feel', or looks the 1911 has...it is simply not cost efficient or reliable relative to other .45's in its price range or even considerably below...Holds 8 rounds.. I see many clinging to it, and I understand why...pride in ownership of a fine looking, accurate pistol. Its time to let go...see what else youre missing ;)

Hmmm ... well we've had the ''underrated thread'' ... guess this one follows that!:p

For me .. pure personal ... I cannot abide Glocks ... and have no wish for one .. I know my P series are both fugly but I'll stick to them.

Equally . no disrespect whatsoever to the HUGE 1911 following .... but no thanks .... I can admire some of them but have no wish to pay such high prices for what often does not really seem anything like good value.

OK .. bigot has spoken!!:D

(crawls back into hole!!) ..............

What is a CZF? I guess its by CZ, but generally aren't they UNDER rated?

Yes, I agree that 1911s are overrated. Don't get me wrong, they work well and look awesome, but they are such a friggin pain to clean. Hah, you need a wrench to dissasemble your gun? I laugh at thee!

You have to love the 1911s for what they are: Great single stack guns that have a lot of class, look awesome, and have a lot of customization options. If it fits my hand better than other guns, I would buy one. but I wouldn't buy one because it is in any way superior to other modern guns.

Glocks:
Proven: Yes
Overrated: HELL YES!!
In fact, this weekend i rented a glock 19 with 3 problems:

1. The mag was too strong for my weak little thumb, it only let me put about 6-7 rounds in without really hurting my thumb.
2. Probably just my mom limp wristing, but had it stovepipe
3. Failure To Feed

Don't know the condition, how often it was cleaned, etc. but it proves that Glocks aren't perfect, just like any other guns

Give me a gun that I can field strip in under 20 seconds and that I can change the grips on.

Easy Answer.

ALL OF THEM
It takes more than a good gun to complete a task. It takes a committed operator.

It can be no more effective than the person controlling it.

A gun is a tool. More exactly it is a machine and it can do nothing on it's own.

There is no such thing as a magic gun.

Ya know, guns in general ARE overrated.

Though they do significantly prevent crime, it takes a lot of judgement and reasoning to narrow down all the available options until finally the only option is to defend yourself.
In most self defense situations the citizen rarely fires a shot, simply letting the guy know you have a gun scares the sh*t out of criminals

Criminals are more scared of citizens with guns than the police...

Police: "Freeze, Police! Put your hands up!"
Versus
Citizen with gun: "BANG!"

It's truly amazing how much folks can reveal about their experience, or lack thereof, in only a few sentences...

The legacy of the 1911 rest soley on the .45 ACP cartridge, not
the 1911 design,

Well, that, and the fact that every combat shooting sport on the planet has to come up with special handicap classes for "Guns That Aren't 1911's" to let them feel involved, too. ;)

How a gun with such a horrible trigger (Glock) can be so highly recommended by so many people is beyond me.

Because it's an extremely reliable, relatively affordable ugly gun with a horrible trigger. As a gun buff's gun, it's mediocre at best; as a reasonably-priced, easy-to-learn, bullet-launching appliance, it's nonpareil; think of it as the AK-47 of handguns... :D

Yes, it is the AK-47 of handguns, except is OOGLY!!!
AKs look awesome

Ok, here's what i think, despite being overrated, these are still good guns.

-Glock: Yeah, it's nice and all, but the way people talk about them you'd think they will cook you dinner. They are great guns though.
-1911: As much as i love them, i'm sick and tired of 1911-centric gun rags (all of them).
-XD: Those same 1911-centric gun rags are all excited that one of the 1911 manufactures came up with a glock....just that, it's a glock. Anyway, i still want an XD subcompact.

As far as HK goes, they are as good as everyone says they are, and supposedly, once their US factury opens, the price should come down significantly. When you find one for $400 like i did, nothing bad can be said.

Dare me? ;) :p
