Overrated guns

Glocks? Maybe, they are worshipped but also bashed a fair bit too.

Sigs? Maybe a little, but I have heard very few bad things said about them. The ergonomics only work for some people, but thats the same with most pistols.

XD? Not really. Take the best of glock and sig with a few more novel problem solutions and you get the XD. Is it the end all of gun development? No, but its a good gun and I have heard few people say anything more than that.

1911s? Yes. Especially the multi-thousand dollar ones that cost more than my car. As if you couldn't put a few thousand into any other gun in the 1911s price range (not a lorcin/jennings/byrco) and get as good a gun. We'll see what happens to 1911 sales when the mag cap ban drops and wondernines are legally plausible again.

HK? Yes. HK is building a factory in the US so the prices will come down to glock prices. Like they were originally. Before they realized they could make more $ and sell more pistols charging more for them. I'll believe the price break when I see it. The exception to this are HK's non-browning fixed barrel guns which are legitimately praised. But the current crop of pistols? Please.

I also think people are confusing overrrated with overpriced. The basic 1911 Gov't Model is neither overrated or overpriced. I don't think I could bring myself to buy a Wilson or Baer when my $600 Colt works reliably and is accurate to boot.

On gun forums, maybe. Lots of folks on gun forums preach the CZ gospel (me included), and maybe overdo it since they are relatively unknown in the "real world."

No answer, just another question.
Is there now, or has there ever been on any internet board, a member with the name " Glock Tuner " ? :)

I feel guns like the CZ75 are bit overrated.
Your probably right..

Now before y'all get your panties in a bunch, keep in mind that I just love CZ 75s...its a visceral thing...but..

Too heavy
Lousy DA pull
Too big
Too tough to use DA with smaller hands
Lousy SA pull

But a nice price...

I had a CZ75, and my overall impression was that it was overrated. The feel of the grip in the hand was good, but thats about it.

I recall the heyday of gun rags praising the CZ-75 as the second coming.. well that was before Glock really caught on.

Any handgun can be overrated.

What is steel to the hand that wields it?

Still, I cringe at paying $600 for a pistol, thgen having to send it off to someone for another $600 to make it 'reliable.' That sounds to me like the factory isn't doing its job. You don't see that on a Glock, Ruger or Browning, so why can't the guys making 1911 clones figure it out?

Since ya used the word "clone", I guess your not referring to the uberreliable Colts...:)

Alaska, agreed.

Rob - ring me soon and you can shoot my box stock Colt sometime.

From what I've seen of Kimber series II they're way overrated.

Definitely Glocks...although I believe that a large percentage of the cause is the people that constantly talk about them as though they were the second coming.

1911 series, great if all you want is a target or defense pistol that will only reliably feed FMJ but I've yet to own/shoot one that would (from the factory) feed JHP reliably. In fact the only one I've bothered to keep around is a MK IV Series 80 Combat Commander in .38 Super, and even it won't feed JHP reliably. (it's extremely pretty and feels great in the hand however) I absolutely refuse to spend money on "tuning" a pistol that already cost well over $400.

The Croatian Sensation, definitely over-rated, feels too much like a Glock and even has the same crap trigger setup.

Desert Eagle, $1,000+ for a pistol that is extremely finicky, can't reasonably be carried and costs a fortune to shoot (unless you reload or settle for .357 mag version, but what the heck's the point in carrying a 6 lb pistol to the range if it's only gonna shoot the same round as a lightweight revolver???)

seacamp .32 acp

costs 'bout $700.00-$800.00/worth $300.00 on a good day
loooong wait to get 'em
has the knockdown power of a spitwad
hard to shoot accurately

My younger brother carries a Glock because it is issue thus less hassel in event of lawsuits etc. His personal pistol is a Smith 8645 - likes the trigger. When I was looking for a pistol he didn't hesitate - 1911 Colt.

He used do firearms instruction at the Illinois Police Training Institute so he as seen them all come through. The only ones he really bashes are the Rugers - bad ergonomics.

Oh my God...the 1911 is, without a doubt, the most outrageously overrated handgun on earth. Finnicky, finnicky, finicky. Everytime I listen to the kool-aid drinkers and break down and buy one I get burned. There is always excuse after excuse--you need the right ammo, you need to get it throated--no,no you need X brand--limp wristing!. NEVER AGAIN!!:cuss:

I love the idea behind the 1911 (single-action cocked and locked)--but in practice they are usually junk.:uhoh: Don flame-proof suit. Cooper's Kool-Aid Kommandos will soon swing in...guns blazing (and jamming!:p :p )

Get a Sig or an H&K (or a Glock with a NY trigg).

GHB

P.S. NEVER AGAIN!!!:banghead:

Ahh Greg....what 1911 model did you have?
I won't listen unless its a Springfield or Colt, anything else is just a mere clone and therefore not worth shiznit

Yes, 1911s are WAY overrated. Its the 21st Century. Double stack guns are IN. Get used to it.

P.S. Anyone know why Browning doesn't sell 1911s? He INVENTED the damn gun didn't he?

1. Kimber Custom (I) Fantastically accurate. Jammomatic.
2. Colt Commander. Crap..crap...crap:cuss:

Really?

Damn...
Scratch the 1911 off my "might ask my parents for in a year or so when i turn 18' list

Can't wait till the 10-round mag law expires. Who thought that would actually save lives?

Fella's & you too Tamara;

I don't have but one H&K USPc, but I've had it for a while now. Maybe even a while & a half. The thing's as reliable as a bucket of rocks. I've had H&K do the ambi operating lever mod to it & the service was quick & at the very reasonable price quoted.

And speaking of overrated: How BOUT those Harley Davidson's, Glocks, and Colt SAA's?

:D 900F

Kahr handguns and Kimber 1911's. I have yet to own a handgun from either of these two brands that was 100% reliable.

Can't say the same for my Wilson Protector(s) 1911 autos.
They have been out of this world reliable, as in zero malfunctions.

My Glocks have been just as reliable as my Wilson (s).

Sorry to hear that. I bought my first Commander back in 1976, it was a well used but totally stock 4 digit serial number .28 Super. Remember the ones with the brown plastic Rampant Colt grips? It would feed anything and everything. I even loaded 158gr LSWC, it was wicked. Accuracy was horrid though because ot the whole headspace on the rim thing. Oh it was combat accurate. I trusted my life to it and carried it often, loaded with 117gr Super-Vel. It was the first gun I ever shot more than 10,000 rounds through. It had 3 genuine Colt magazines with it whan I got it and I sold it around 1990 with the same 3 magazines. In the mid 80s I put a Bar-Sto barrel in it and after that the accuracy was where it should be. I think I could count the total FTF on my fingers and those were lube problems.

In the past 30 years I have never had a Commercial Colt that wouldn't feed HP. If it didn't 100% straight out of the box it would with just a slight throat polish with a craytex wheel in my dremel.

If I was told I could pick any brand new semi-auto pistol in the world, but that I had to carry it as-is-box-stock with no break-in period I would choose a new blue steel Colt 1991 NRM with either a 5" or 4¼" barrel.

And if you think I'm blowing smoke, just come to Seattle, buy me one and watch me. I'll carry it everyday for a month, then I'll go to the range and show you how a reliable pistol works.

n3rday,
I have been following your posts for the past 2 weeks and you have been flip-flopping back and forth like a Catfish on a flat rock.
Quit basing all of your opinions on what you read in a Gun Magazine or from what 3 or 4 people say in a forum.
Sit back, relax, listen and learn. Soak up all the opinions, read some more. Ask lots of questions. Pay attention to what everyone says but take it ALL with a grain of salt. THEN go handle and shoot as many guns as you can.

Then form YOUR OWN opinion. Guns are a very personal thing. Even more so that cars. Find what works best for YOU. As for me I love O-frame Colt semi-automatics and N-frame S&W revolvers. But that's just MY opinion.

But lots and lots of peole do just find with other guns. Glocks are great guns. CZ are great. Rugers seem to work very well. Berettas are fine weapons. you really can't go wrong with a Browning HiPower. Is any of them perfect? Hell no. But that's ok because there are no perfect shooters either. The closest you'll ever come to perfection in anything will be in your dreams.

So take your time. After all at your age you have plenty of it. I guarantee you'll change your mind of what you really want a bunch of times before you're 18.

I tried many of the uber-new-and-improved guns as they came out over the years. It took me a long time to realize what worked best for me.
Trust me, over time you'll figure out whats really best for you. And after all that's what's REALLY important.

Just my tuppence. YMMV
