Most voluminous powder suitable for 45acp?

I don't own a 45ACP much less load for it but if you want to fill the case with a safe load, Trail Boss would do the job!

I'm using TB in a light "powder puff" load for my fiance and 3.0g nearly fills a .38spcl case. Her LCR has less recoil than a .22WMR with this load.

I've heard Trail Boss mentioned a few times and I've used some in .45 Colt. I've never heard of it being used in an autoloader before.

Has anybody actually tried this and if so, what were the results?

Not sure if the press type was mentioned, but this is one reason I like an auto indexer. To double charge, you would have to manually move at least two cases on the press; one out from the charging station, and one that was already charged back into the charging station without dumping it first.

Basically, you would have to put forth a special-kind-of-stupid effort to make it happen.

On a non-auto-index, you just have to have a brief mental lapse about what you did or didn't do.

Certainly there are times that something jams and I have to clear off the shell plate on my 650, but when that happens, the first thing I do 100% of the time is dump all the powder from all the open cases... always.

Never had a squib or double charge yet in ~130k rounds.

One of the dual purpose (shotgun/handgun) powders might be a good choice. They tend to be somewhat less dense than handgun specific powders.

I've listed some below, with the least dense at the top and the most dense at the bottom.

700X
Red Dot
American Select
Titewad
Competition
WST
Nitro 100
Universal

Just as a rough guide, Universal weighs about 50% more than 700x for a given volume.

Of course, there are a couple of down sides to some of these powders. Some may not burn very clean in the 45 ACP. And some, like Titewad, require a very light charge, so they still may not achieve the case fill you desire.

I load 45 ACPs with 800X. It would be really difficult not to see a double charge. I'm almost certain it would overflow the case. Of course, 800X is like corn flakes, so it is a giant PITA to work with if you don't have an auto trickler.

People poop on 800X, *but* it honestly works pretty well and I've been told it's the preferred powder for a lot of Underwood's fancy pants cartridges.

I realize that it would be difficult for me to find an acceptable powder that would overflow on a double charge -- and with the press being motorized, I'm not sure I could even visually catch a double charge. I'm probably better off using a powder check die and combining the seating/crimping processes.

I applaud your decision to move to a bulkier powder when using a progressive press. More reloaders should smarten-up and do the same.

There are many powders out there that will overflow the case when a double-charge is accidentally thrown. I use Unique for .45ACP and purposely double-charged a case to see what it looked like. The powder was heaped over the top of the case and had spilled onto the shell plate of my 550.

Additionally, if a double-charge is thrown that does not overflow the case but is close to the top, when you seat the bullet you will hear and feel the crunch of powder as the bullet is forced down into the case.

Lastly, even with a 550 , it pays to visually examine each charged case before you rotate it to the next station. I have a lamp setup to shine down onto the shell plate.

Trailboss was the first to come to my mind when reading the OP.

I have had good results with 200 and 230gn plated bullets using TB. You won't get full recoil loads, but it was enough to cycle my Witness pistol with the stock recoil spring. Look for max velocity of about 750fps with 200gn and about 700fps with 230gn.
