Morning all,

Say I live in DE for example, and I am moving to NJ. DE allows shot guns with pistol grips, High capacity mags, etc. NJ doesn't. Leagaly what would have to be done with all the stuff I already own? Would I have to sell it?

Thanx

Probably your best bet would be to contact someone in the state you plan on moving to and see what their laws allow. I would choose someone with some legal standing such as a state firearms organization, the controlling police agency in that state, or a lawyer who specializes in firearms law. Some states may allow you to keep items you already possess while others might not. It's best to ask those in the know.

And if the answer is "No! You can't keep it."..find someplace else to live if you can.

I've been told that NJ allows you to bring your stuff with you when you move in, but not by anyone with authority to say so, so...

As far as "assault weapons" you wouldn't be able to bring them in, hi-caps are out, ditto shotguns with pistol grips, so you'd either have to modify them or dump them before you come in. Also, you'll need a FID card from you local police dept in order to buy ammo and stuff, I believe that's also required for possession of firearms.

I moved to NJ from NYC six years ago and I went thru a runaround on both ends, had to have my handguns sent to an FFL, etc. The best thing I can say about NJ's gun laws is that they're better than NYC's.

AFAIK:

There is no need to involve an FFL regarding your own firearms that you personally bring into the state when moving in.

DO NOT bring in anything NJ classifies as an "assault weapon":

Summary: 19 named armaments, or any semi > 2 evil features.

Incidentally, pistol grip shotguns are OK, as long as they aren't semiautomatics. I've seen pump shotguns for sale in jersey complete with ALL the evil features: folding stocks, pistol grips, barrel shrouds, etc

Hi cap mags: nothing over 15 rounds, temporarily or permanently blocked mags are OK.

FID: get one, ASAP. Keep your guns in your home until you've got that all squared away, and spin yourself up on the laws.

My advice: **** with respect to exactly whatcha got. Registration of imported arms is entirely voluntary, and not to your benefit.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, I am an informed layman, and former Jersey guy. Evan Nappen (http://www.evannappen.com) is a lawyer, and a damned good one if you've got serious questions.
