Questions for NY and NJ based members

The $10 processing fee; $25 fingerprinting fee; and $99 DCJS fee are all one time fees. Once you have your license the State takes a $3.00 fee to add any pistol to your license.

Hope your stomach didn't get too upset.

When is comes to gun ownership in New York State, things are actually pretty good, once you get out of NYC and its suburbs.

New York State does not have any storage requirements. Safe storage is recommended, but not mandated by law. However, keep in mind that liability lawsuits are alive and well.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Prof. A. Wickwire

As a former resident of upstate NY, NYC, and Hoboken NJ I think Prof hit it on head. Long guns are FTF transfer, no restrictions beyond the awb mentioned earlier. Handgun permits are "may issue". You'll need to find a Rockland county member to give you the details on local difficulty/timeline.

I lived in Wisconsin to avoid Chicago/Illinois gun law stupidity. I live in PA because I did not want to deal with MD's crappy gun climate. I would NEVER choose to live in New Jersey because of their onerous gun laws. I would move back to upstate NY because I had no hassles with guns at any stage, and can afford to buy pre-ban weapons. And the hunting and fishing are pretty good:)

Gun stores in the vicinity of Monsey:
The Firing Line, Pearl River (has a range)
Davis Sports, Sloatsburg
Master Class Shooters' Supply, Monroe (has a range)
Bob's Gun Exchange, Chester
Gander Mountain, Middletown

Davis Sports bought another store that used to be called Knight's, which has an indoor range. I'm not sure where it is, other than that it is in Orange County.

There's another store in Newburgh, but I'm not sure the name. I think it's Anderson Arms, but I can't find a listing for that on the web.

There are several clubs in Orange County, and some in Rockland. I don't know the Rockland clubs, but Monroe - Chester and Black Rock are supposed to be pretty good. I used to go watch a friend shoot SASS at Monroe Chester.

Chaim,

As a long time resident of NJ, I'd seriously suggest considering NYS, insofar as guns are concerned. If you opt for NJ do all the 'good things' i.e. voter registration, etc and after six mos. apply for an Firearms Owners Identification Card, (FOIC). Even a hunting license - which requires classes/tests helps.

FWIW there's a lot of confusion about gun law in NJ - particularly among LEOs - so expect "problems" in unusual situations say like a MVA with guns in the car. Guns in the car at night are a serious situation here. >MW
