Ok, so I'm not moving anywhere, but some friends are. They're Texas residents at the moment, and they own a shotgun. We have concocted a plan whereby they give me the gun here in TX (I'm a Texan, too), move up there, acquire this idiotic FOID thing, and then I ship the gun to their local FFL to complete this round-robin of transfers to keep everything legal.

So, somebody please tell me that it's simpler than this and that they can just take the gun with them and deal with the FOID thing along with all the other establishing residence activities. And just how to do that, too.

Don't quote me on this, but I think they have so many days after moving here to apply for the FOID.

They could(should anyway) keep queit about thier guns until the get thier FOID card.

My condolences to your friends. Moving from Texas to Illiniois is not my idea of moving up.:( Where are they moving to in IL?

Yeah, well, at least they lived in Moscow On The Colorado before making the move. It's as close to communist as it gets in Texas, so they're at least somewhat prepared.

Some little village that's almost in WI. Wonder Lake, I believe.

Generally, the further they get away from Chicago, the better off they will be. However, Chicago has some of the best food in the country!:what:

first I offer my condolences to your friends read the information at
www.packing.org for illinois. look into out of state FOID card willing to bet one may not be issued. www.icarry.org
www.concealcarry.org
www.illinoiscarry.com
www.isra.org
courts have ruled you have no right to police protection and the police are not liable for failing to respond or protect you but hey the foods good. so enjoy the crimnal ridden Government in Illinois more specificly chicago that protects and support the criminals. dont forget to enjoy the food while you can.

Just bring it along, and shut up until they get the FOID.

No CCW here, and they should stay away from the paved over district in the north east corner.

"shut up until they get the FOID"

Also, don't try to buy ammo, or look at guns in a gun store, or transport the gun in your car, or go to a range.

A shotgun in the safe at home is not likely to get them in trouble. Just don't have any "gun interactions" outside the home until you get the FOID.

FOIDs are taking anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 weeks. While there is no actual grace period for FOID there is for getting an IL driver's license. They'll need an IL driver's license to apply for a FOID. They can DL an application at http://www.isp.state.il.us/media/docdetails.cfm?DocID=38
They can also check around and get more info at http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/
They should keep a copy of their application altho that in and of itself does not make them legal but it shows they've applied. They shouldn't hunt or shoot until they get their FOID.

I personaly believe they are ok while driving to their new residence with the gun because they would still be Texas residents untill they are setteled in their new home. After that if the gun stays locked up in the home with no one having knowledge of it's existince there should be no problem. Another possible way would be for the gun to be stored with you until they have the FOID card then the next time they are back in Texas retrieve the gun and take it home to Illinois.
Another possibility, and I am not sure of the legal or practial aspects of this plan, would be for your friend to box the gun up to be shipped to himself with his new adress. Then after the friend has the FOID you could deliver it to UPS or whoever for him. I think this might work since ownership was never changed, you only stored it for him. Any one with more knowledge may feel free to correct me on this idea. Jim.

Just shut up...

When i moved to IL, i kept my guns to my self even my brief stay in chicago. When I could I got an foid and am now legal. Guns aren't registered unless you buy them here and need the foid to buy them or ammo. You can go to Wi and buy ammo, Gander Mt has a new store right over the line and no fuss no muss. Your previously purchased guns are your business and are not required to be reported to the state. Many localities have differing laws..see Morton Grove and Wilmette specifically. Transport your guns unloaded and with the ammo seperate. The guns must be cased and "unaccessable to the driver" the trunk is preferred or rear cargo area. The case must be unable to allow you to fire the gun.!! ie: no holes in gun sacks etc. I was once stopped by a consv. officer who saw my csed guns (5 or 6) in the rear of my SUV while I ws fishing. Even tough i produced my foid and fishing license when i wouldn't produce my drivers license (I wasn't driving) he got testy and radioed for backup. The rriving sargent chided him for paranoia and agreed with me. He asked permission to inspect my guns and we spoke for several mins re: pump vs autoloaders etc. So it just depends on the person. I now keep a copy of the statute regarding transport and the foid in the car in case of confusion.

Just to clarify if you are an illinois resident by state law your guns don't have to be inaccessable. You can have your handgun case on the seat next to you. Might get you hassled, but its legal.

There is no requirement for residents or visitors to have the ammo stored seperately. Loaded mag in the same case as fine as long as its not in the gun.

Individual communities may make stricter laws, those communities are found here http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/ordinances.cfm

If they can, they should live in Wisconsin (pro-gun state) and just work in Illinios.
That's what I said, but evidently they found some really great deal on a house and the company gave them a great relocation package. *sigh*... I'd rather pitch manure on a pig farm in North Carolina than design computer chips in IL.
