WAIT! DON'T PANIC ! ! ! ! I'm not giving up on percussion or going to never buy a muzzle loader. Let me explain.....

I was into a couple of the local shops today asking about sources for honest to gosh Holy Black only to learn that no one locally is bringing it in. Due to its classification as an explosive it would need to be brought in by itself rather than mixed in with other ammo or reloading supplies. As a result none of the local shops are carrying it according to the two that I asked.

So that leaves me with buying left overs from other former users or finding some other source... yeah, right......

So once my present "almost 1 pound" can of Goex is gone I guess I'll be reduced to Pyrodex or 777.... *sigh*.... and here I was just getting used to the idea of the rotten egg fart smell at the end of each day of cap-n'-ball playing.... *sigh*

Likely it's not totally over. I'm sure I'll come across some from local former users that I can buy. But it'll be less and less and dry up soon enough.

... mind you... I still have yet to make contact with the local Holy Black underground contingent. It may well be that they have sources.... yeah, "sources" are good aren't they? I mean they sell quality stuff that isn't cut right?

Wha?.... desparate? Who, me ?!?!?!?! NO NOT AT ALL! I CAN QUITE ANY TIME I WANT! ! ! ! !..... I just don't want to.....

That 777 is good gear ! I'm tellin' ya straight. (Even IF ol' Jaegermeister don't like it) :D

BCRider, that just sucks.

If I thought I wouldn't be penalized 15 yards and loss of down (the heavy penalty?), or charged with launching an attack on Canada by throwing black powder cans over our heavily patrolled border, I'd have you go deep for a few passes. ;)

Image below is clickable for more details on this border area. Har.

Oh, didn't notice that.

Move to America, then! :D

I'd try making your own. I'm starting my first batch of homemade this weekend.

"Move to America, then!:D"

HEY! I thought of that at one point. The area around Mt Vernon is to die for. But I'd be giving up on our medical program. And despite its faults it's done well by me when I had a little "C" issue some 15 years back. And NO it was not a C section! ! ! ! :D

Ginormous, if I had my baseball glove still I'd consider it... :D

At least Ratdogg is saying that there's life after BP. So all is hardly lost. And I can't see getting into the whole making my own since I've got other hobbies as well despite the fact that, like you lot, I'm posting this on a Friday night when I/we should all be at some pub with our buddies getting light headed.... :D

Well... I be sittin' here... sandin' on my T/C Cherokee stock... slatherin' some Tru-Oil on it, sippin' on a cold one (or two) and watchin' 'yote huntin' on a DVD. I'm perfectly content with tonight's scenario. I was out and about two nights this week already.

Truth be told I'm not really into the friday night noisy pub scene any more either. But I'm on for a rib BBQ at a buddy's after a motorcycle race on Sunday! :D

Got out today for some shopping and trap shooting and MAN! I would not have thought holding up an 870 for four boxes of shells would leave my arms screaming for mercy like it did. I obviously need to get back into some wind surfing.......

So... getting back onto topic. I understand that Pyrodex needs to be underloaded by a little. Or is that the 777 and Pyrodex can match with BP?

Ain't pulled a S/G trigger in quite a few years. Got three of 'em though. A Winchester 1200 Police (Pump), a Winchester 1500 XTR (auto-loader birdgun), and a double barreled side by side with exposed hammers that hasn't ever been shot. It sat in the previous owner's gun safe for a decade. I bought it last fall.

777 needs to be backed off about 10-15% than standard BP loads.

Hey now

nothing wrong with 777 or Pyrodreck , or any of the others , I just prefer to use BP is all to keep the heritage alive , and I love the smoek and fire that the others DO NOT provide . I use whatever goes bang the ebst , but I try always to run BP in hopes it does well , and it useually does more times than not .

Can't a way be found to order some of this new Diamondback brand of BP.
The company is partly located in Canada!
What's odd is that Powder Inc. will only ship Diamondback all by itself in 25 lb. or 50 lb. lots @ $10/lb.

February 20, 2009. Diamondback! New powder - blackpowder!. This blackpowder from Diamondback Powder Co., Tamaqua, PA and Canada, is pretty good. We have it in 2F and 3F for re-enactors, cartridge loaders, and generally for people shooting with blackpowder. Enjoy!

BCRider, I'm going up to Canada (Ontario) next month for the MLAIC Zone Championships.
We, the U.S. shooters, will all be taking our own powder up there & the Canadian authorities have no issues with that. Do you think you would be able to buy some in the U.S. & take it back home with you just as easy? May be worth looking into. If you have a friend in Blaine, or someplace handy, you might be able to have an order from PowderInc sent there for you to pick up.

That's an excellant point. I know there's an embargo enforced by the US Border Services on letting us bring in modern reloading supplies without an export permit but you reminded me that black powder isn't part of the embargo. I'll have to look into that option.

Differences with 777

I shot 777 for a while here in Oregon until I got my flinter... the ignition point is higher than BP, so a good cap is a must! (we used RWS caps) Problem with 777 it that it turns to mud when wet and you can't just dry it out like BP. Not the best for coastal hunting, don't ya know!

Nowdays I only shoot the flinter, so I only shoot Black!:) Life is good when the rock is sharp!

I concur...777 is good stuff. So it ain't BP but neither is Pyrodex. Seems like most peeps are shooting with Pyrodex; my last choice outta the three propellants I have listed here.

BTW, Diamondback is the revamped Elephant BP....just sayin'

777 and Pyrodex are both easily avaiable. But I understand that the smoke show is missing with those. Of the two which belches smoke the most like good ol' black and just how similar is it in density?

Neither

there is no compairison , and lets not forget the FIRE !
If you have never shot the Holy Black on a fog filled morning at Dawn and watched the billow of smoke and roar of fire come out your barrel and linger in the air for what seams like eternity , you DONT KNOW what your missin . :D
Nether of the other two do that , whatsoever .

Das Jaeger :D

Pyrodex actually contains sulphur so it's not totally unrelated to black powder.
Pyrodex P flows better, the granules are very uniform and it burns cleaner than Pyrodex RS (ffg).
Pyrodex P is more similar to fffg black powder than 777 is, and it does produce smoke too although just not quite as much. :)
