My brain is tired; do I need a taller front sight or shorter?

Working a 12hr shift and my brain isn't working.

Converted my Glock G19 back to carry configuration by removing the red dot and suppressor sights and added a Glock factory rear night sight and a Dawson fiber optic red front I had laying around, just to see if I liked the combo. I did, but at 7yds, it is shooting about 5" low.

Will likely just put the factory night sight front back on it, or try the outlined rear factory sight since I like that combo for matches.

But I was toying with getting a proper height front FO sight and I could not get my head wrapped around as to whether I need a taller front sight or a shorter one.

I'm thinking I need a shorter front sight, but my brain is tired.

Your brain is fine. You need a shorter front sight.

Changing the height of the front sight changes the point of impact in the opposite direction. A taller front sight will push the point of impact down, a shorter front sight will raise it on the target.

Move rear sights in the same direction you want the group to move. Move front sights opposite the direction you want group to move.

And use the Brownells Sight Correction Calculator to know just EXACTLY how much you need to raise or lower the front sight (or rear sight).

You can measure the current sight and ask for one that is the appropriate fraction of an inch lower.

This post made me have an epiphany. I have a Canik TP9SF, and recently bought a sight pusher to change from stock sights to TruGlo Tritium. Well, the pusher worked great on the rear sights, so I got those on, however this "Universal" pusher doesn't work on the front sights, so I shot last Friday with stock front/TruGlo rear. I hit 300 rounds low. I was pissed at my bad trigger technique the whole time. So after I saw this post, I put the new and old front sights side by side. DRUM ROLL- The damn new sight was 3/4 as tall as the old front sight which was still on the gun. DUH. So I was actually shooting great based on the sight situation. Shelving that gun for a week while the gunsmith installs the new front sight, to match the new rear sight. I'll shoot the 22lr pistols and the 9mm pcc tomorrow.
